Charleston, W.Va. – The University of Charleston Director of Athletics, Dr. Bren Stevens announces the hiring of Adam Hamad as the new head women's volleyball coach, effective immediately.
"It is an incredible experience when you have the opportunity to bring back to campus one of your assistant coaches to take over the helm of a program. I am quite pleased to announce that Adam Hamad will be the new head coach of the women's volleyball program," said Vice President and Director of Athletics, Dr. Bren Stevens. Additionally, Dr. Stevens shared "Adam's leadership ability along with his commitment to state-of-the-art training will allow our team to excel on the court, in the classroom, and in life. Coach Hamad possesses a high level of emotional intelligence, and I am looking forward to the synergy that he will add to the UC community."
Hamad will be returning to Charleston as the women's volleyball coach after completing a two-year stint as an assistant to the men's volleyball program from fall 2020-spring 2022. While at UC, Hamad worked to enhance team operations, by establishing a shared system that housed film, practice notes, statistics, and depth chart planning—ensuring day-to-day tasks were seamless and collaborative. He also spearheaded the planning and organization of practices, including the creation of a virtual notebook full of drills to keep sessions fresh and engaging. In addition to coaching responsibilities, Hamad led eight sport psychology sessions for the team and other campus programs. His commitment to mental wellness was further recognized when he was invited to speak at "Breakfast Club," a student-athlete-led mental health group supported by faculty and staff.
Following Hamad's time at Charleston, he moved on to Arcadia University where he served as the head men's volleyball coach for three seasons. Notably, Hamad led his team to a conference tournament all three seasons, defeating three top 15 nationally ranked opponents, and piloting three student athletes to All-MAC honors.
Prior to Hamad's time at UC, he spent eleven months at Mount Union as an assistant coach to the men's volleyball team where he helped lead the team to their first ever winning season for the program. Hamad worked closely with the head coach to develop and implement detailed plans for practices and match preparation. He also took the lead in film analysis and shot charting, contributing significantly to the creation of scouting reports and competitive strategy.
Hamad began his college coaching career at Hiram College where he served as both an assistant to the men's and women's volleyball programs. Hamad played a key role in team development, recruiting, and program operations. He also worked closely with the head coaches to plan and execute daily practices and match strategies as well as playing an instrumental role in building a competitive and well-balanced roster for both programs.
"I'm incredibly honored and grateful to be named the head women's volleyball coach at the University of Charleston," stated Hamad. "This truly feels like a full-circle moment in my career coming back to a place that helped shape who I am as a coach and as a person. There's something special about being able to return to a community that means so much to me. The talent and heart within this team are undeniable, and I'm beyond excited to get started and see what we can achieve together."
The Ohio native has a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Akron as well as a Master of Arts from Hiram College focusing in interdisciplinary studies.
