Golden Eagles Take 3-4 from Mountain Lions

Athens, W.Va. – The Golden Eagles took three of four games from the Concord Mountain Lions last weekend to sit at number one in the south region heading into the final weekend of the regular season.     
 
GAME 1
 
The Basics:
Location: Anderson Field
Score: UC 3, CU 9
Records: Charleston 20-21 (15-8 MEC), Concord 23-20
 
How it Happened:
Samuel Lemond got things going for Charleston in the top of the first inning with a two-run homerun to center field for the early 2-0 lead. The lead stuck until the bottom of the fourth when Concord plated six runs on five hits and one UC error.
 
Charleston plated their third run of the game on another Moose Lemond homerun, collecting the third RBI of the contest and cutting the deficit to 6-3.
 
Concord plated three insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning, Charleston committing three errors. Unfortunately, the deficit was too much to overcome and the Golden Eagles fell 9-3 in game one of the series.
 
GAME 2
 
The Basics:
Location: Anderson Field
Score: UC 13, CU 12
Records: Charleston 21-21 (16-8 MEC), Concord 23-21
 
How it Happened:
Game two was a back and forth battle that went eight innings to decide a winner. It was Concord who scored first, platting a single run in the bottom of the first. Charleston quickly got back into the game with an Evan Ulrich solo blast in the top of the second to tie the game at 1-1. The Golden Eagles were not done yet as they plated two more runs in the inning to take a 3-1 lead.
 
Charleston then extended their lead in the fourth starting with a Lemond two-run shot, his third homerun of the afternoon. Then Wilfredo Mendez hit a bases clearing double to bring the score to 8-1 Charleston leading. Charleston tacked on a ninth run in the top of the fifth to take a 9-1 lead over the Mountain Lions.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, Concord began to make a comeback, plating six runs on zero hits and one UC error. The Mountain Lions were walked four times and hit three times in the inning allowing their runs to score.
 
Charleston then scored three runs in the top of the seventh, once again on no hits, four walks and a hit batter being the culprit and Charleston leading 12-7 heading to the bottom of the seventh.
 
The free passes continued in the bottom half of the inning, two hit batters, five walks, and a single hit plated five runs for Concord, the score tied at 12-12 and headed to the eighth.
 
Casey Finck led off the inning with a single up the middle and then advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third again on a wild pitch. Moose Lemond then grounded out to first, scoring Finck from third for the go ahead run. William VanMeter then sat down the Mountain Lions in order to collect the win for Charleston.
 
GAME 3
 
The Basics:
Location: Anderson Field
Score: UC 7, CU 3
Records: Charleston 22-21 (17-8 MEC), Concord 23-22
 
How it Happened:
Charleston began the scoring in the third inning, three runs all coming off bases loaded walks, Lemond, Ulrich and Dosenbach all collecting RBI's. Concord then platted one run in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to 3-1.
 
In the top of the sixth, the Golden Eagles got the run back, Lane Wesimiller singled to center field to score Mendez. Concord responded in the bottom half of the inning, cutting the lead to just one-run with a two RBI hit to trail 4-3 to Charleston.
 
Moose Lemond then homered in the top of the seventh to score two more runs before Wilfredo Mendez delivered the final blow with a sacrifice fly RBI to extend the Charleston lead 7-3. Scott Templeton then closed out the game for Charleston on the mound, allowing a hit before closing out the inning.
 
GAME 4
 
The Basics:
Location: Anderson Field
Score: UC 7, CU 6
Records: Charleston 23-21 (18-8 MEC), Concord 23-23
 
How it Happened:
Concord plated four runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead over Charleston in game four of the series. The Golden Eagles then plated a run one a bases loaded walk in the top of the fourth but gave the run right back as Concord scored a run in the bottom half of the inning.
 
UC then scored two runs in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit, Mendez and Dakota Miller collecting RBI's in the inning. Concord then got one back in the bottom half of the inning, plating a single run and bringing the score to 6-3, Concord ahead.
 
In the top of the sixth, Charleston's Lemond doubled to right center field, collecting an RBI as Casey Finck came around to score, UC trailing 6-4. Then after keeping the Mountain Lions off the board in the bottom of the sixth, Charleston was down to their final three outs and Dakota Miller homered to left center field, plating three runs and giving the Golden Eagles a 7-6 lead and just needing three outs.
 
Scott Templeton delivered, collecting three outs for the save and giving the Golden Eagles their third win of the series.
 
Up Next:
The Golden Eagles will head to Institute, WV on Saturday, May 3rd to take on West Virginia State beginning at 1:00PM.
