Charleston Claims #1 Seed in the South as They Head to the MEC Tournament

Charleston, W.Va. – The Golden Eagles and the Yellow Jackets split the final series of the regular season. Charleston took two from State on Saturday in Institute and then the Yellow Jackets returned the favor in Charleston on Sunday.
 
GAME 1
 
The Basics:
Location: Calvin L. Bailey Field
Score: UC 5, WVSU 1
Records: Charleston 24-21 (19-8 MEC), WV State 25-20 (15-12 MEC)
 
How it Happened:
Charleston's Dakota Miller got the scoring started in the top of the second with a deep shot to center field for the no doubter solo blast. Later in the inning, Lane Weismiller doubled to center field, plating Carter Rust and Trent Dosenbach for a 3-0 Charleston lead.
 
Collin Kemp then added to the Charleston advantage in the top of the fifth with a solo homerun to left field, Charleston now leading 4-0. State found the scoresheet in the bottom of the sixth with a solo homerun of their own to cut the deficit. The Golden Eagles then responded right back in the top of the seventh when Evan Ulrich homered to left field on the first pitch he saw.
 
Scott Templeton was credited with the save for UC and Campbell Spradling collected the win on the mound in the 5-1 UC victory.
 
GAME 2
 
The Basics:
Location: Calvin L. Bailey Field
Score: UC 13, WVSU 4
Records: Charleston 25-21 (20-8 MEC), WV State 25-21 (15-13 MEC)
 
How it Happened:
The Golden Eagles plated four runs in the first inning of game two, Damian Witty and Wilfredo Mendez each homering. Witty hit a solo shot and Mendez brought in three with his blast to right field. West Virginia State got one back in the bottom half of the inning but the Golden Eagles held the lead at 4-1.
 
The Charleston bats went back to work in the top of the second, plating seven runs including another Wilfredo Mendez three run blast. Aiden Brunner, Caleb Knapp, and Drew Gault also collected RBIs in the inning.
 
WV State then plated two runs in the third on a two run shot to cut the deficit to 11-3, Charleston leading.
 
In the top of the fifth, Damian Witty hit his second homerun of the afternoon for Charleston, scoring Zach Syvertson and extending the Charleston lead to 13-3. State tacked on a run in the bottom of the inning with another solo homerun but the Golden Eagles still held the commanding nine run lead, 13-4.
 
The game then got suspended in the seventh inning due to inclement weather and was forced to be finished on Sunday at UC,  but neither team plated a run in the final inning, UC taking the win 13-4.
 
GAME 3
 
The Basics:
Location: Welch Athletic Complex
Score: UC 1, WVSU 4
Records: Charleston 25-22 (20-9 MEC), WV State 26-21 (16-13 MEC)
 
How it Happened:
An error put West Virginia State University on the board in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead over Charleston but that quickly changed when Dakota Miller homered to left field, which helped Charleston tie the game at one in the bottom of the first.

In the top of the sixth inning, West Virginia State University went back into the lead after Kyle Waters walked, Michael Bittinger was struck by a pitch, and Nathan Paulsen hit a sacrifice fly, each scoring one run.

Todd Douglas started the game for Charleston. The hurler surrendered one hit and one run (zero earned) over two and two-thirds innings, striking out none and walking four. Ayden Hodges began the game for West Virginia State University. The starting pitcher gave up two hits and one run over seven innings, striking out nine and walking three.

Miller went 1-for-2 at the plate and led the team with one run batted in. Miller and Alec Mendoza each collected one hit for Charleston. Carter Rust stole two bases.
 
GAME 4
 
The Basics:
Location: Welch Athletic Complex
Score: UC 5, WVSU 9
Records: Charleston 25-23 (20-10 MEC), WV State 27-21 (17-13 MEC)
 
How it Happened:
A single by Alec Mendoza put Charleston on the board in the bottom of the first.

Aidan Paulsen scored after tagging up, which helped West Virginia State University tie the game at one in the top of the third.

Charleston jumped back into the lead in the bottom of the third inning after Damian Witty doubled to center field, and Caleb Knapp walked, each scoring one run.

West Virginia State University flipped the game on its head in the top of the seventh, scoring seven runs on seven hits to take the lead, 9-5. The biggest blow in the inning was a home run to left field by Ethyn Barnitz that drove in three.

Karson Frye earned the win for West Virginia State University. The right-handed pitcher surrendered two hits and one run over one inning, striking out one and walking none. Devin Walsh took the loss for Charleston. The reliever went one inning, giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits, striking out one and walking none. Mason Behn led things off on the hill for Charleston. The hurler surrendered zero hits and zero runs over two innings, striking out one and walking none. Zane Loveday began the game for West Virginia State University. The pitcher allowed four hits and three runs over three innings, striking out two and walking one.

Charleston accumulated nine hits in the game. Mendoza drove the middle of the lineup, leading Charleston with two runs batted in. The 3-hole hitter went 2-for-3 on the day. Witty and Mendoza each collected two hits for Charleston. Charleston turned one double play in the game.
 
 
Up Next:
The Golden Eagles will take the short trip to GoMart Ballpark on Wednesday, May 7th at 7:00PM to take on Fairmont State in the Mountain East Conference Tournament.
