Charleston Picks Up Midweek Win Against Shawnee State

Charleston, W.Va.- Golden Eagles get a big win against Shawnee State in midweek single nine inning game.

The Basics

Score: UC 10, SSU 6 
Records: UC 3-14 (0-0 MEC), SSU 11-4 (0-0 RSC) 

How it Happened 
Nick Hulme was the starter for the game versus Shawnee State. State got out to a 1 run lead after they hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning. UC fired back after back-to-back singles by drew gault and Max Layne. Derek Siess hit a sac fly bringing one home. The game was tied one after one. Hulme and the Lions pitcher both had clean second innings. 

In the third SSU packed on a couple of runs on a triple and ca couple of errors in the inning. UC entered half of the third down 3-1. It wouldn't stay that way long as Garrett Broadwater led the third off with a single. Shawnee State made quite a few mistakes this inning, hitting Drew Gault and then having an error letting Broadwater score. Abe Fenwick had an RBI groundout tying the game up at 3.  

Shawnee state returned the offense in the top of the fourth. An error and a few timely base hits quickly gave the lions a 6-3 lead. Charleston didn't stop creating offense and in their bottom of the fourth Ashton Cochran and Patch Lyman both walked and a single by Alex Ramon scored one. Garrett Broadwater grounded out but not before another run scored, and now it's a 6-5 ball game.  

Sam Sheets replaced Hulme in the top of the fifth. SSU was hit by a couple of pitches a had single loading the bases. Sheets worked out of it as Alex Ramon turned a clutch double play, leaving the score where it was. UC took the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Drew gault reached on an error. Abe Fenwick crushed a two-run home run, putting the Golden Eagles up 8-7. 

Both pitchers had good sixth innings, and the score remained 7-6 UC.  

Both Owen Mcmulkin and Larry Lamont pitched in the top of the seventh and combined to get three outs. Abe Fenwick stayed hot in the bottom of the seventh, singling and making it all the way around the bases to put UC 8-6.  

JP Shultz was next to the Golden Eagles on the mound and he shoved. Shultz closed the game with a scoreless final two innings. The Golden Eagles added insurance runs in the eighth inning as the Lions walked a couple of runs in making it 10-6. UC walked away with the win and got their third win of the season.

UC has a double header against wheeling away at the Washington Wild Things stadium to open Mountain East Conference play this Saturday.
