Washington, Pa.- The Golden Eagles split the series against the Wheeling Cardinals, winning game one of the day but dropping game two in a close contested battle.
Game 1
The Basics
Location: Washington Wild Things Stadium
Score: UC 4, WU 3
Records: UC 4-14 (1-1 MEC), WU 11-5 (1-1 MEC)
How it Happened
UC did not score in the top of the first inning, but Breven Deckrosh the starter for the Golden Eagles got them the bats right back. Freshman Andrew Kobryn gave Charleston an early 1-0 lead with his first collegiate dinger.
Deckrosh had a clean bottom of the second inning and Charleston would come back in the third with another run as Zach Syvertson reached on an error and Samuel "Moose" Lemond doubled to left center field making it a 2-0 ball game. In the bottom of the third Wheeling tacked on one run as a couple of singles and a walk led to one run scoring.
Every time Wheeling scored Charleston fired right back as in the top of the fourth a Trent Dosenbach single and advancing to 2nd on an error led to an Andrew Kobryn single advancing Dosenbach to third, John Stansbury then grounded out but not without an RBI as he scored Dosenbach. The game was 3-1 going into the bottom of the fourth.
Deckrosh continued to shove in the bottom of the fourth inning and in the top of the fifth Zachary Syvertson was hit by a pitch and stole second and right after Dame witty doubled to left field scoring Syvertson making it a 4-1 game.
The bottom of the fifth was more of the same for WU but in the top of the sixth UC's offense was also stifled.
The Cardinals finally found some offense in the bottom of the sixth inning as they got deck rage out of the game after a great outing in came Kai Close and Wheeling found some success getting a couple of hits leading to a couple of runs and making the game 4-3 with one inning left to go.
The Golden Eagles did not score in the top of the 7th but neither did Wheeling as Abe Fenwick closed the game for the Golden Eagles. UC took the 4-3 win and game one of the series.
Game 2
The Basics

Score: UC 8, WU 9
Records: UC 4-15 (1-1 MEC), WU 12-5 (1-1 MEC)
How it Happened
Game 2 started like game one as UC did not score in the top of the first. Landon Ingram got the start on the bump for the Golden Eagles. He had a scoreless first inning despite Wheeling hitting a couple of singles Charleston did not score in the top of the second either a leadoff home run by Wheeling gave them the lead in the bottom of the second Charleston scored right back as Samuel "Moose" Lemond doubled to left field scored Zach Syvertson who was already on base. The Cardinals scored again in the bottom of the third as a hit by pitch led to two singles that scored another runner making the Game 2 to one.
Charleston did not score in the top of the fourth inning, but this was the inning that Wheeling took off another home run was hit off Ingram making the game 3-1. JP Shultz replaced Ingram. Shultz struggled in his time in the game. He walked a couple of batters as well as hitting one then the Cardinals hit a double and a single blowing the game open and giving them a 7-1 lead going into the top of the fifth.
You see clawed back in the top of the fifth scoring after Moose Lemond, Collin "cookie" Kemp, and Dame Witty were all hit by pitches, loading the bases. Trent Dosenbach grounded out advancing the runners and scoring Moose Lemond. Andrew Kobryn did the same as Dosenbach grounding out into an RBI. Now the game was 7-3.
Owen Mcmulkin came in to pitch in the bottom of the fifth. Wheeling university scored two runs off him as a hit by pitch led to a single. Then a couple of sacrifice flies brought in both runners on base. And the game was 9-3 headed into the top of the sixth.
Wheeling made a pitching change in the top of the sixth and Charleston. Finally started putting offense together Ryan Comella singled starting off the inning. A walk and a hit by pitch loaded the bases. Colin "Cookie" Kemp hit a single to right field scoring 2 runners. Which forced Wheeling to make another pitching change. Then Trent Dosenbach followed with a single to center field scoring Kemp. Right after this Andrew Coburn would stay hot tripling to right center field bringing in two more. Runs. Suddenly, the game was 9-8 headed to the bottom of the sixth inning
Sam's Sheets came on to pitch in the bottom of the sixth and had a clean inning giving UC one more chance to score but they did not. Wheeling would take the win 9-8 and they would split the series.
