Golden Eagles Split Sunday Series with Hilltoppers

West Liberty, W.Va.- The Golden Eagles split the series and get a big come back win against West Liberty. 

Game 1 

The Basics 
Location: Kovalick Field 
Score: UC 1, WLU 12  
Records: UC 4-16(1-2 MEC), WLU 4-8 (2-1 MEC) 

How it Happened 
The first inning was a rough one for UC. The did not score in the top of the inning. Devin Fletcher started the game for Charleston, but West liberty started quick. Walks and singles were the story of the inning. WLU put six runs up in the first. 

Ethan Bechtold came in for the next two innings and went scoreless. The West liberty starter did the same thing.  

The game remained 6-0 until the bottom of the fourth. The Hilltoppers had some good offense and scored off a few Singles and a home run. Simon Bargo entered the game, and it was 10-0. He pitched solid and only gave up one run, but WLU was up 11-0 after four. 

Not much happened again until the top of the sixth as Bargo had a three up three down inning. In the top of the sixth Drew Gault doubled and Dame witty followed with a double of his own. Giving UC their first run of the game.  

WLU scored one more this game after Hudson Walls entered the game. Walks pitched well and left it there.  

The Golden Eagles never found any offense and lost 12-1. 

Game 2 

The Basics 
Location: Kovalick Field 
Score: UC 9, WLU 6  
Records: UC 5-16 (2-2 MEC), WLU 4-9 (2-2 MEC) 

How it Happened 
UC started slow once again in this one. They did not score in the first few innings. Kyle "4K" Evenhus. The Hilltoppers got off to a quick start and a couple of hits, walks, and errors. Gave WLU an early 3-0 lead.  

Jay Peterson came in and pitched phenomenally. No runs scored until the bottom of the fourth.  

That run belonged to Charleston as Trent Dosenbach scored Moose Lemond on an RBI single. The game was 3-1. Peterson continued his dominance in the bottom of fourth striking out two. 

WLU finally scored in bottom of the fifth on a single, but UC fired right back with a solo bomb.  

Peterson stayed in and in the bottom of the sixth WLU scored a run on an RBI double. Kai Close came in and worked out of the inning. The score was 5-2 and UC had one more chance.  

Charleston took advantage of their chance. Trent Dosenbach hit a lead off single. Andrew Kobryn was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch. The Ryan Comella did a job. He grounded out but got an RBI making the game 5-3. Then Hunter Howell hit a Sac fly scoring Kobryn. With the game 5-4 Charleston only had one out left. John Stansbury hit a double in the gap. Then Max Layne hit a clutch single, scoring Stansbury. The game was now 5-5. Kai close threw another scoreless inning in the bottom of the seventh and the game went to extras.

Neither team scored in the eighth. UC took over in the top of the ninth, Ryan Comella led off the inning with a single. Hunter Howell walked and John Stansbury reached on an error. With the bases loaded Zach Syvertson scored on a balk. Max Layne stayed hot and singled, scoring two. Layne would end up scoring on an error and UC was up 9-5 attempting to close the game in the bottom of the ninth.  Abe Fenwick finished the game nicely and WLU blew the game. Charleston came back and won 9-5.

Charleston will have a double header at home against Frostburg state starting at 4:30 PM.
