Athletic Hall of Fame to Induct Five New Members



CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The University of Charleston is proud to announce the 2010-11 Athletics Hall of Fame Class to be inducted Saturday morning.

The five inductees are:

Peter Ciccone
   Peter Ciccone


A four-year letter winner from 1968-1971 in baseball at Morris Harvey College, Peter Ciccone was named an Outstanding College Athlete in America in 1970. He played in every inning of the first 77 games of his career. He was named to the WVIAC All-Conference Team his freshman and sophomore years and was named team captain in 1970.

Peter and his wife, Linda, are retired sausage company owners, living in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. They are parents of two children, Nicole and Nicholas (deceased).

John Duernberger
   John Duernberger

According to the WVIAC, John and his son, Chad, are the first father and son to be selected to First Team All-Conference honors in any sport. During his soccer career at Morris Harvey College, John set a school record for most goals scored in a season and scored five goals in one game.

As a four-year letter winner from 1968- 1971 and team captain in 1971, John started the first soccer clubs in West Virginia at Charleston High School and DuPont High School, and coached in the first-ever high school soccer game in the state. He also became a well-known soccer official around the Kanawha Valley.
In the early 1990s John started youth soccer leagues in the eastern Kanawha Valley that still play today. He is a retired teacher with Kanawha County Schools.

John is married to the former Susan Ash and they live in Belle, West Virginia. They are the parents of two sons, Scott and Chad. Chad is a graduate of the University of Charleston and is the current UC men's soccer coach.

Mike Good
  Mike Good

Three-time WVIAC Coach of the Year and four-time Golf Coaches of America District Coach of the Year Mike Good led his teams to 11 WVIAC Regional Championships, two NCAA East Regional Championships, and 31 total tournament championships.

Good was the UC Men's golf coach from 1992-2005. He holds a coaching record of 1,701-777-41. His teams were five-time WVIAC champions, and he coached two All-Americans, four Academic All- Americans, 15 All-Conference or All- District players and five WVIAC Players of the Year. His team also scored a WVIAC Regional Single Round Record of 271 and a WVIAC Championship Scoring Round of 893.

Mike and his wife Carol live in Columbus, Ohio, and are the parents of two daughters, Allison and Meredith. He is currently employed in the oil & gas industry.

Beth Ann Rist
  Beth Ann Rist


The second all-time leading basketball scorer for UC with 1,740 points and a First-Team All-American in 1984, Beth Ann Rist is also top ten in career steals, assists, blocked shots and games played.

During her career as a Golden Eagle Rist earned such honors as selection to the All-American Second Team in 1982 and WVIAC All-Conference teams in 1982, 1983 and 1984.

Beth Ann lives in Ironton, Ohio and is a police officer for the City of Ironton.

McKinley Barnette
  McKinley Barnette
- Meritorious Service

Known as the unofficial historian of UC/MHC athletics because of his vast knowledge of the history of the athletics program, McKinley Barnette has also been instrumental in bridging the gap between Morris Harvey athletes and the University of Charleston.

During his junior and senior years at Morris Harvey, he played baseball while simultaneously serving as the student manager for the football and basketball teams.

In the 50 years since his graduation in 1955, Barnette has worked in nine county school systems either as a coach, teacher or administrator. He has also coached baseball, football and basketball within those school systems and his teams have had a 68% winning percentage.

Barnette lives in Point Pleasant, West Virginia.
