Golden Eagles Top Vulcans at Clarion Hotel Classic

Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. (Nov. 10) – Senior forward Xavier Humphrey scored a game-high 25 points behind five three-pointers in a 65-55 win over California University of Pennsylvania on Sunday afternoon in the final day of the Clarion Hotel Classic.

Charleston opens the season with a 2-0 record under first-year head coach Dwaine Osborne, who was previously the head coach at Texas-Permain Basin and Glenville State.

Leading 17-12 midway through the first half, the Golden Eagles mounted a 17-6 run over nearly nine minutes. Cal U was limited to only two field-goals during the span, as Charleston built a 34-18 lead just before halftime. After the teams traded baskets early in the second half, Cal U trimmed the deficit to single digits, 41-32, with an 11-3 run over almost six minutes. The Golden Eagles would increase their lead to as many as 14 points in the final minutes of the game and prevented the Vulcans from getting any closer than nine points.

Cal U finished the game shooting 41.9 percent (18-of-43) from the field despite making only 20.0 percent (3-of-15) from beyond the arc. Charleston posted similar marks of 40.4 percent (21-of-52) from the floor and 21.7 percent (5-of-23) from three-point territory. The Golden Eagles registered a 33-31 rebounding advantage and scored 15 points off turnovers.

Charleston senior Xavier Humphrey scored a game-high 25 points behind five three-pointers, while freshman Denio Chrindja added 11 points off the bench after making 9-of-10 free-throw attempts.

The Golden Eagles return to the hardwood Saturday afternoon in a road contest against Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C before returning home on Nov. 23 to open the MEC schedule against West Liberty University.
