Golden Eagles Fall to Golden Knights in NCAA Tournament

Box Score Erie, Pa. – The Charleston Golden Eagles fell to the Gannon Golden Knights in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
The Basics:

Records: Charleston 19-10 (14-6 MEC), Gannon 29-3 (19-1 PSAC)
 
How it Happened:
Charleston entered the NCAA Atlantic Regional contest as the #8 seed set to face the host team and #1 seed, Gannon Golden Knights. The Golden Knights won the initial tip and scored the first points of the game on a jumper. The Golden Eagles attempted some three-point shots, but it would be the Gannon who scored the first three-ball of the evening, taking a 5-0 lead with 17:39 left in the half. Braden Chapman scored the first points for UC on a fast break layup to bring the score to 8-2 Charleston trailing. The Golden Eagles continued to struggle for the next several minutes, Trevor Barrett scoring the only point as he went 1-2 at the free throw line. UC trailed 14-3 with 11:39 left to play in the half. Charleston found some shots in the coming minutes, but the Golden Knights had an answer, UC trailing 32-16 with 5:51 left in the half. The Golden Eagles headed to the locker room trailing the Golden Knights 44-28.
 
Charleston scored the firs two points of the half on a Thomas Hailey layup and then immediately forced a thurnover4 which UC converted into another two-points on a Matthew Shelton dunk. Gannon responded with a three-pointer but Charleston responded with another bucket, trailing 47-34. The Golden Eagles began to struggle to maintain possession, turning the ball over and allowing Gannon to extend their lead 62-38 with just under 11 minutes left in the contest. The Golden Eagles then went on a 9-2 run to cut the deficit but Gannon hit a three right before the media timeout, leading 67-47 with 8:14 left to play. Gannon continued to build their lead, ahead 78-50 with under five minutes left in the game. The Golden Eagles could not overcome the deficit, falling to the Golden Knights 83-58.
