How it Happened:
The University of Charleston entered the late-night contest as the #4 seed and the Glenville State Pioneers entered the Mountain East Conference tournament quarterfinal match as the #5 seed. The much-anticipated contest began with the Pioneers winning the initial tip and immediately heading to the line to shoot two on a Matthew Shelton foul. The Pioneers converted on both free throws scoring the first points of the night. Charleston got on the board with a Matthew Shelton tip in dunk to tie the contest. For the next five minutes the Pioneers went on a 13-4 run, taking a 15-6 lead over the Golden Eagles as the first media timeout was called. After several scoreless minutes, Hamilton Campbell finally broke the spell with a three, but the Golden Eagles still had a lot of ground to make up trailing by ten to the Pioneers. As the whistle was blown for the under-ten media timeout, Glenville State held the lead 21-12 over the Golden Eagles. The Pioneers continued to stay hot, going on a 7-0 run out of the media and forcing UC Head Coach James Long to call a thirty-second timeout with 7:26 left in the first half of play. Charleston found a little bit of life in the last few minutes of the half, heading to the locker room trailing 26-13.
Â
Glenville found the scoreboard first in the second half with a shot from beyond the arc, but UC's Ben Nicol responded with a three-ball of his own. The Pioneers built their lead back up, but Charleston responded with a 11-2 run to cut the deficit back to 11, trailing 55-44 with a little over ten minutes left to play. As the under ten media timeout was called at 9:44, Charleston trailed 60-48 to Glenville State. After the timeout, Thomas Hailey found a layup and completed the and-one play to cut the deficit to single digits. A play later, a key offensive rebound from Shelton led to a Kaden Davis three-pointer, Charleston now trailing by six, 60-54. The under-five media timeout was called and Charleston trailed 70-60 with 4:49 left to play. The teams traded buckets for the next two minutes before Coach Long called a timeout for UC at 2:39, his team trailing 72-65. The Golden Eagles could not overcome the deficit and fell to the Pioneers 79-76.
