UC Falls in Tough Game

Box Score CHARLESTON, W.Va.—The Golden Eagles fell to the visiting Wheeling Jesuit University, after the Cardinals scored a winning goal with two seconds left to play, defeating UC 19-18.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Golden Eagles suffered a heartbreaking loss on Sunday afternoon after a last second goal by Wheeling's Hayley Holmquist secured the 19-18 win for the Cardinals. Wheeling started the game off strong, with three goals in three minutes before UC's Samantha Youngman scored in the sixth minute of first half play to begin the momentum forward for Charleston.  The Golden Eagles scored three more goals after this before WJU could secure another, leading them 4-3 with 19:31 to play in the first half.  The Cardinals then gained control of the game again, heading into the break with a 12-7 lead over UC.
 
Charleston flipped a switch in the second half, with Esther Yi taking control of the game for the Golden Eagles. UC allowed a goal in the first minute of second half play, but Esther Yi responded quickly with a goal that led to five goals in a row for the Golden Eagles which put them in a spot only trailing to WJU 14-13.  The game continued to go back and forth between the two teams and with 8:42 left to play, the Cardinals led 18-14.  UC did not give up scoring four goals in three minutes to equal the game at 18-18 with 5:45 left to play.  UC couldn't keep control of the game, allowing Wheeling to slip a goal in with 00:02 left to play, falling to WJU with a final score of 19-18.

CHARLESTON INDIVIDUAL LEADER
- Esther Yi led the Golden Eagles with six goals and one assist for seven points.
- Samantha Youngman led UC in assists with two.
- Kyra Tye had 15 saves on the day for Charleston.

WHEELING INDIVIDUAL LEADER
- Hayley Holmquist scored six goals for the Cardinals.
