CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- Rich Meckfessel, the winningest basketball coach and Athletic Director at Morris Harvey/University of Charleston history passed away on Wednesday, June 26, at the age of 81.
Meckfessel began a 17-year career at Morris Harvey in 1965 after his time at Washington-St. Louis. Upon his arrival, he served as the Athletic Director, head coach for the Men's Basketball program, and head coach for the Golden Eagles' men's tennis team.
Current Men's basketball coach, Dwaine Osborne took time to reflect on coach Meckfessel's time leading the Golden Eagles. "We were so sad to hear of the passing of Coach Meckfessel," said Osborne. "Coach is not only the winningest basketball coach at Morris Harvey/UC, but he was a strong ambassador and lover of our great institution. He has truly made a great impact on so many people. Our prayers and deepest condolences go out to his family as we celebrate the life and contributions Coach made throughout his life."
Meckfessel led the Golden Eagles basketball program for 14 years (1965-1979), boasting a 250-168 record. His Golden Eagles brought home the WVIAC regular season championship three times and were two-time WVIAC tournament Champions. Meckfessel was also honored as the WVIAC Coach of the Year twice during his time at the program.
The Morris Harvey College basketball teams made three NAIA Sweet 16 appearances under his leadership, leading to an Elite 8 appearance in 1967. Meckfessel was named the West Virginia Sports Writers Coach of The Year during that record-breaking season.
In addition to serving as the head coach for the men's basketball program, Meckfessel served as the head men's tennis coach at Morris Harvey from 1966-1976, with a record of 113-72. The men's tennis program won eight WVIAC championships while he served as the head coach.
Meckfessel served as the Athletic Director for the Morris Harvey College for 17 years. When his term began the school sponsored only four sports; growing to a 14-sport department under his leadership.
University of Charleston Athletic Director, Dr. Bren Stevens understood the impact that Meckfessel had, not just to the basketball program, but to the Athletic Department and the University as a whole. "Coach Meckfessel's success in the basketball arena was nothing short of amazing," said Dr. Stevens. "Perhaps, more importantly, is the number of lives that he touched throughout the years in his roles as the head basketball coach and Athletic Director for our university. Over time I have experienced numerous conversations with Rich's former athletes in which it was clearly evident that they held Coach Meckfessel in high regard. The news of Rich's passing deeply saddens our UC community, and we send our prayers, love, and sympathies to Judy and the rest of his family."
