Charleston MEC Champions for 5th Consecutive Year

Box Score Charleston, W. Va – On Sunday, the Golden Eagles hosted the Notre Dame Falcons for the Mountain East Conference Tournament Championship. Charleston had won four consecutive title matches coming into this matchup and looked to keep their streak alive with an energetic performance.

The Basics
Location: Welch Athletic Complex
Score: UC 2, NDC 1
Records: UC (18-1, 16-1 MEC), NDC (15-4-2, 12-4-1 MEC)

How it Happened
Charleston had won both games prior to this matchup with a combined score of 4-0, scoring 2 goals in each match. In the first 15 minutes of play, Charleston had already found the pair.

In the 10th minute, a great pass inside the box from Santiago Hoyos found Lewis Redding on a run towards the net. On an off-balance shot, Redding sailed the shot past the Falcon keeper for the early 1-0 advantage. Five minutes later, Charleston would capitalize on the momentum. Duvan Canchila calmly lobbed the ball into the box and found Paul Caliari who would sink his shot into the net with the use of his head for the 2-0 lead.

The Golden Eagles played very possessive and controlled for the remainder of the half and Charleston would trot into the locker room with the comfortable 2-0 margin in their favor.

The Falcons came out of the break with a chip in their wings. After a blunder in the defensive third for Charleston, Ailton Fagner Silva found a one-on-one opportunity with Marc Torrado and blasted it just under the crossbar to end the Falcon Drought and cut the deficit to one.

As championships typically go, tensions were high between the two squads. The Falcons were able to work numerous shots on Marc Torrado, but the Spaniard remained a brick wall for the remainder of the match.

The Golden Eagles would hold on for the 2-1 win and bring the title back to the Capital City for the fifth consecutive year.
