Charleston, W. Va – The Golden Eagles will face the Fairmont State Falcons in the opening round of the Mountain East Conference Tournament tomorrow afternoon. They will enter this tournament without a loss to the Charleston name and an MEC South Division Regular Season Title. Not to mention, the squad also named quite a number of Golden Eagles to the All-MEC list that was released yesterday.
Up to this point in the season, Charleston holds an incredible scoring margin of 69-8, averaging just under four goals in every contest. They also hold their opponents to just seven shots per game, while the Golden Eagles fire off on average 18 shots a game on the other end of the pitch.
Juliette Lucas and Sophia Mankowski lead the way with 10 goals each for the Golden Eagles, with multiple of those goals coming off assists from Lina Jaime, a dangerous set-piece master who also has contributed eight goals up to this point.
Charleston also enters this tournament as the 6
th nationally ranked team in the United States, the highest ranking they have received in program history. They currently sit as the 1
st seed in the Atlantic Region with a 15-0-2 record. Behind them are three PSAC programs: Kutztown, Mercyhurst, and West Chester. Frostburg State stands as the 5
th seed in the region with a 14-1-2 record, with their only loss of the season coming from the Golden Eagles back in September.
Tomorrow, they face the reigning MEC Tournament Champions at the Welch Athletic Complex. In their last meeting, the Golden Eagles were able to escape Duvall-Rosier Field with a 3-2 victory to remain undefeated on the year. Despite a 5-8-1 MEC record, the Falcons are always a team you must not take lightly. They have scored 32 goals on the year and average just under two scores in each contest. The team is led by Alejandra Puerto who leads the team with six goals and an assist, alongside their goalkeeper Olivia Johnston who has put up 68 saves through 16 games and has saved 70% of the shots that she has faced.
