HUNTINGTON, W.VA. – Men and Women's Indoor Track & Field swept the Mountain East Conference Championships this past weekend, taking home 48 awards and the conference championship title.
With a score of 172, the women won their third championship in a row., while Beth Sykes represented the Charleston women as the MEC Track Athlete of the Year. The sophomore placed first in both the mile and distance medley relay alongside teammates Mercy Jepleting, Sage McLaughlin and Jeanne Corroy whom also received first team honors in the DMR. Junior Abby McKinney and Sophomore Julie LaFare were also named first team all-conference, as McKinney won the weight throw with a mark of 16.68 and LaFare won the 5000m with a time of 10:06.99. LaFare also received all-conference second team honors in the 3000m.
Other all-conference winners for the women include Minke Engelbrecht (60H: 9.23-Second Team), Stefani Vasileva (Triple Jump: 11.49m-Second Team), Laura Delgado de Torres (Pentathlon-Second Team; Long Jump: 5.31m-Honorable Mention; High Jump 1.57m-Honorable Mention), Balie Destefano, Erica Davis, Marina Barahona, Maya Clark (4x400: 3:59.44-Second Team), Jeanne Corroy (800m: 2:20.74, Mile: 5:09.19, 5000m 17:42.97-Honorable Mention), Maya Clark (400m: 57.41) and Camilia Hoya (Triple Jump: 11.49m).
For the third time in four years, the men also snagged the conference championship title with a score of 169 points. The Golden Eagles won three of the four awards presented by the conference with Kellen Tropeck being named Field Athlete of the Year and Sam Idiens being named Freshman of the Year. Tropeck won both the shotput and weight throw with marks of 16.13m and 17.67m to secure all-conference first team honors. Like his teammates Antonie Aflalo, Damian Smith and Warren Thiel, Idiens received all-conference first team honors after they raced to a first-place finish in the distance medley relay with a time of 10:03.29. The freshman also earned second team honors after placing second in the mile with a time of 4:14.63.
Other all-conference athletes for the men include Thiel (4x400: 3:14.53-First Team; 800m:1:54.35-First Team) Joshua Sterner (4x400: 3:14.53-First Team), Michael Garret(4x400: 3:14.53-First Team; High Jump: 1.93m-Honorable Mention), Bram De Raedt (4x400: 3:14.53-First Team; 200m: 21.94; 400m: 47.94- First Team), Zane Chalker (5000m: 14.23.29-Second Team; 8:25.72- Honorable Mention), Letlhogonolo Ramafuthula (Long Jump: 6.74m-Second Team; Triple Jump: 13.90m-Second Team), Luke Messinger (Shot Put: 14.68m-Honorable Mention) and Mathias Mees (Heptathlon: 4074-Honorable Mention).
After leading his teams to more success this season, Nick Bias also picked up his 25
th and 26
th Coach of the Year award in just his ninth year as Head Coach.
