UC Outdoor Track & Field Puts on an Impressive Showing at NC State

RALEIGH, N.C.—University of Charleston Track & Field showed out at the Raleigh Relays at NC State University this past weekend. Six school records were broken, six personal bests were crushed and five season bests were set.
 
Iggy Chalker stood out for UC Men's Track & Field in the Men's 10,000m. The junior put up a personal best and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 29:22.63 which was good for 56th place. This was the second fastest time in school history. Currently, he ranks ninth in NCAA Division II and first in the MEC. 
 
Julie LaFare also put on a show in the Women's 10,000m. She placed 32nd and set a new school record with a personal best and an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 34.55.27. The sophomore ranks fifth in the nation in NCAA Division II and first in the MEC by over four minutes. 
 
Other standout athletes for Charleston include George Couttie and Sam Idiens. At 23rd place, Couttie was the top Division II finisher in the Men's 1500m. He crossed the finish line at 3:43.70, a personal best and a new school record. The freshman ranks third in NCAA Division II. Idiens placed 29th in the Men's 800m at 1:51.11 (personal best & NCAA provisional qualifying time) and 94th in the 1500m at 3:50.50 (personal best). In the MEC, he ranks first in the 800m and second in the 1500m. 
 
Included in the school record-breaking performances this weekend is Manual Campana (Men's Javelin) and Timber Hysmans, Michael Garrett, Alejandro Salgado and Colin Hunkele (Men's 4x4). With a mark of 57.71 meters, Campana was the first Division II finisher and ranks first in the MEC by two meters. Charleston's 4x4 put together a record-breaking performance as well, crossing the finish line in tenth place at 3:15.60. They were the second division II team to finish at the meet, and they rank first in the MEC.
 
Among the 4x4 group, Garrett was also successful in the 400m, as he posed a season best time of 49.30 for 32nd place. Huysmans claimed 38th in the 100m with a season best of 10.79 and 11th in the 200m with a season best of 21.47. Balie Destefano was another top performer for UC Women's Track & Field. She hurdled her way to 30th place in the 400H with a season best time of 1:04.61. With this time, Destefano currently leads the MEC. 
 
Also performing well in North Carolina was Warren Thiel (1500m – 3:52.03 – personal best; 800m – 1:51.43 – season best), Kellen Tropeck (Shot Put - 6.33m – 17th; Discus – 43.06 – 41st), Frankie Winter (Discus – 43.61m – 39th), Antoine Afalao (3000m Steeple Chase – 9:13.44 – 51st ) and Dennis McCheskey (3000m Steeple Chase – 9:38.80 – 68th).
