Golden Eagles Excel at Ashland Invitational, Idiens Runs NCAA DII's Fastest 800m

ASHLAND, Ohio — The University of Charleston track & field teams put together a standout performance at the Ashland Judd Logan Light Giver Invitational, highlighted by multiple school records, top finishes, and new Mountain East Conference (MEC) bests. Meanwhile, Sam Idiens delivered a historic run at the Doc Hale Virginia Tech Meet, recording the fastest 800m time in NCAA Division II this indoor season.

Men's Highlights

Sprint & Hurdles

  • Timber Huysmans dominated the 200m, taking 1st place overall with a 21.32, a mark that currently ranks 12th in the NCAA. He also placed 6th in the 60m (6.88).
  • Massimo Pantano set a new school record in the 60m hurdles (8.09), finishing 4th overall and securing the top time in the MEC while also meeting the NCAA provisional standard. Rob Agrizzi followed closely in 7th (8.18), ranking 2nd in the MEC.

Distance

  • Caleb Gilbert and Cosmas Chelanga put on a show in the 3,000m, finishing 1st (8:15.59) and 2nd (8:15.95), respectively, setting the top two times in the MEC. Gilbert's time also broke the school record.
  • Corey Schobelock placed 3rd in the 5,000m (15:16.41), ranking 12th in the MEC.

Field Events

  • Frankie Winter took 8th in the shot put (16.07m), claiming the top spot in the MEC, while also finishing 10th in the weight throw (16.15m).
  • Luke Messinger and Jullian Matthews had strong performances in the weight throw, finishing 6th (16.63m) and 7th (16.46m), respectively.
  • Cameron Tropeck cleared 1.85m in the high jump, ranking 5th in the MEC.

Relay & Multi-Events

  • The 4x400m relay team (Agrizzi, McElrea, O'Shea, Gomez) finished 9th in 3:26.22.
  • Adonis Soto and Blake Stanton competed in the heptathlon, placing 24th and 26th overall.

Women's Highlights

Sprint & Hurdles

  • Colette Patti earned 4th in the 60m (7.69, 2nd in MEC) and 9th in the 200m (25.33, 4th in MEC).
  • Maya Clark posted a 56.93 in the 400m, securing 9th overall and the top MEC time this season.
  • Beth Sykes shattered the school record in the 800m (2:15.00), placing 5th and securing the top spot in the MEC.

Distance

  • Madison Woolwine finished 11th in the 3,000m (10:28.29).
  • The mile squad saw Mercy Jepleting lead the way in 25th (5:18.01).

Field Events

  • Abbey McKinney threw 17.91m in the weight throw, placing 6th overall, 1st in the MEC, and 15th in NCAA DII.
  • Laura Delgado de Torres had a strong showing in the triple jump (11.42m, 3rd overall, 2nd in MEC) and high jump (1.50m, 5th in MEC).
  • Sidney Pfeiffer secured 14th in the long jump (5.17m).

Relay

  • The women's 4x400m relay (Hoya, Pekic, Sykes, Clark) finished 8th in 4:00.42, the fastest time in the MEC.

Sam Idiens Makes History at Doc Hale Virginia Tech Meet

At a separate meet, Sam Idiens delivered a historic performance in the 800m, running 1:48.29 to place 4th overall. His time is currently the fastest in NCAA Division II this indoor season and the fastest in MEC history.

The Golden Eagles will look to continue their strong indoor campaign as they prepare for the upcoming MEC Indoor Championships.
