CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A holiday college hoops tripleheader - the "Basketball Triplefest" - is coming to the Charleston Civic Center.
The West Virginia Conference's two Kanawha Valley rival schools - West Virginia State and the University of Charleston - will join West Virginia as the home teams in the Nov. 27 men's basketball event.
That's the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend. Originally scheduled at the Civic Center that night was WVU's annual early season game in the 12,600-seat arena, this time a 7 o'clock tipoff against VMI.
However, WVU has gotten together with State, which is playing host to its annual John Dickensheets Classic. UC is in that two-day Division II classic, swapping visiting teams with the Yellow Jackets.
The final day of the Dickensheets Classic is being moved from Fleming Hall on the Institute campus to form the Civic Center "Triplefest." UC will play Bellarmine (Ky.) at 2 p.m., followed by WVSU against Virginia State at 4.
VMI will still play West Virginia at 7.
The night before, Charleston with face Virginia State and the Jackets will play Bellarmine at Fleming Hall at 5:30 (UC game) and 7:30 in the Dickensheets Classic.
Triplefest tickets - priced at $27 (lower arena) and $15 (upper level) - will be good for all three games, and WVU Deputy Athletic Director Mike Parsons said spectators are able to come and go through the Civic Center on the same ticket throughout the day.
State Coach Bryan Poore said his team and UC are enthused about working with WVU. State, as the Dickensheets classic host, will receive 500 tickets from WVU and the Civic center to sell on its own and retain that revenue.
The other three Dickensheets Classic team allotments will come out of State's 500 seats, Parsons said.
There is no football conflict for the three "host" schools that date. WVU will have played at Pitt in the annual "Backyard Brawl" rivalry game the previous day. The West Virginia Conference football season will be completed before then.
