Charleston University:
Charleston (15-3-1) marked their second consecutive WVIAC conference championship title on Nov.6, 2010. The Golden Eagles have won the WVIAC Championship four times in the past 11 years, with titles coming in 2010, 2009, 2004, and 1999. The Golden Eagles have three players that have equal to or more than six goals and three assists. Dion Peters leads Charleston with 12 goals and 28 total points thus far this season. Peters also adds four helpers and three game winners. Rob Vincent contributes a well rounded eight goals and eight assists on his way to totaling 24 points. Vincent also has four game winners, making him a threat anytime he is near the net.
The Golden Eagles ran through their conference holding an 8-1 record, their only loss in the conference came at home against West Virginia Wesleyan, 1-0. Charleston’s road record is very impressive as they have only dropped one game while playing at their opponent’s field. Ohio Dominican handed Charleston their only road loss in OT.
Charleston’s defense has been an integral part of why the team has experienced so much success this season as they are only allowing on average .79 goals per game. The defense for the Golden Eagles has only allowed 87 on shot targets with their goal keepers saving 72 of them. Sean Teepen has been stellar in between the post for Charleston and has recorded seven shutout wins for the Golden Eagles. Teepen carries in a 15-3-1 record into postseason play.
Shippensburg University:
The Red Raiders have posted a 14-5-1 record winning their last 12 consecutive games. During the PSAC playoffs the Red Raiders beat Slippery Rock by a convincing five goals. The only thing that stood between the Red Raiders and their first PSAC championship since 1975 was East Stroudsburg. East Stroudsburg gave Ship a run for its money, but Ship showed their persistence as they played to 2OT tie then won in PK’s, 3-2.
The Red Raiders played to 8-2-1 home record this season, their away record is marked at 6-3. The Red Raiders hold a slight advantage entering play this weekend as they have played every seeded team. They kicked off their season with a 4-1 loss to Charleston. The Ship then traveled to West Virginia to play the Bobcats, a game they lost in 2OT, 1-0. A few days later Ship made the travel to Erie, Pa. to play against the Mercyhurst Lakers. The Lakers beat the Ship 3-1.
Shippensburg proves to be a late half team as they have outscored opponents 28 to nine in the second half. Their attack has been led by Miles Harringer who leads Ship in goals (11), assists (7), and total points (29). With the help of Harringer Ship is currently ranked 17th in the country in scoring offense (2.5) and are tied for 12th in total goals (50).
Ship’s defense has given up on average 1.4 goals a game this season. Clay Sale of Shippensburg has seen the majority of time in the net for the Red Raiders. He supports an 11-2-1 record while saving 63 shots on his way to five shutout wins.
Coach Jeremy Spering has turned around a 2009 Shippensburg team that struggled, recording an overall record of 1-13-4, and came up winless (0-6-2) in a conference that they won this season. Spering earned his top coach honor that was awarded to him by officials on Nov.9.
