Box Score

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Davis & Elkins men’s soccer team did little to help itself in their upset bid of No. 4 ranked University of Charleston as the Senators miscued two own-goals, while the Golden Eagles added two goals of their own in the 4-1 victory, Tuesday night at Triana Field.

In the first half Charleston controlled the contest from the beginning touch as much of the half was played on the D&E end of the field. UC out shot Davis and Elkins 9-to-1 in the half, while Senator goalkeeper Patrick Murphy kept his team’s hopes alive with four saves.

The second-half was much of the same as the Golden Eagles continual attack finally found the goal by forcing the first own goal by D&E. The Senator defender tried to clear the ball in from of the goal around three offensive players only to mishit the header back into the goal.

Charleston found the back of the net again at the 56:11 mark as All-American Rob Vincent (Liverpool, England/Prescot) streaked down the left-side of the field beating two defenders before firing a shot from 15-yards out to make the score 2-0.

Davis & Elkins kept the game within reach as Bediako Swan slipped a shot past Golden Eagle keeper Sean Teepen (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) just 13 minutes later to cut the UC advantage to 2-1. Teepen would earn the win in goal, while recording three saves on the evening.

The game was put to rest as sophomore Dan Walmsley (Manchester, England/Cardinal Newman) scored off a perfect pass from countryman Ryan Osborne (Wakefield, England/St. Wilfred’s) to increase the lead to 3-1.

The final score that sealed the game came again from a Senator miscue as a defender blocked the ball into the net while trying to clear from the offensive push of Charleston.

The University of Charleston returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 1:00 pm against West Virginia Wesleyan at Coonskin Park (Schoenbaum Stadium). The game was orginially scheduled for Saturday at Triana Field, but has been moved due to poor field conditions.
