CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The University of Charleston volleyball team grabbed its second consecutive West Virginia Conference victory as they rolled through a 3-0 win over Concord, Wednesday night in Eddie King Gym.
The Golden Eagles (8-13, 2-2) dropped the hammer from the opening serve as the team combined to hit over 30 percent in all three games of the match as Concord (8-11, 2-3) was unable to match the intensity UC brought to the floor.
Brenna Youlton (Ontario, Canada ) paced UC with a .500 hitting percentage as she controlled the middle of the net to record six kills along with two blocks. Charleston set the pace early behind Youlton with a 14 kill effort, while attacking at a match-high 37 percent in a 25-18 first set victory.
Set number two saw
Lora Goss (Birmingham, AL) find her form continually putting the ball back into play against a soft CU presence at the net. Despite committing just four errors in the set Concord was unable to compete against the Golden Eagle offense that pounded out 16 kills in a 25-16 win. Goss led all Charleston hitters on the evening with 12 kills and two blocks.
A late Mountain Lion charge would be absorbed the University of Charleston in set three as CU put together its best game of the night by hitting 21 percent with just two errors, but on this night even that performance could not book them points on the scoreboard against Charleston. Concord got within 16-13 after an early UC lead, but power-hitting
Cara Hibbs-Leyva (San Diego, CA ) took control of the match down the stretch to ensure the victory. Hibbs-Leyva stepped up in the third set to end the evening with nine kills in 22 attempts, but it would be Youlton who close out the night with the final shot of the night for a 25-20 win.
Katie Williams (Gettysburg, PA ) paced the Charleston attack with 25 assists and nine digs, while
Kelsey Eby (Portland, OR) continued to provide the two set option with 18 assists.
Malleri Hardison (Uniontown, PA ) and
Julia Moskal (Ontario, Canada) also booked over 30 percent hitting on the evening as they accounted for eight and six kills, respectively.
The Golden Eagles will continue conference play on Friday, Oct. 7 as the team travels to face Ohio Valley in Vienna, W.Va. at 7:00 pm.
