Men's Basketball Holds Strong in 59-56 Win

Box Score

VIENNA, W.Va.
– Senior John White (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) slipped a free-throw through the net with six seconds remaining to seal a 59-56 win on the road at conference opponent Ohio Valley, Thursday night.

White’s free-throw did not ease the stress for Charleston (9-11, 7-9) head coach Mark Downey as for the second-straight time in the OVU-UC series the Fighting Scots had a chance to tie the game with a good look at the basket as time expired. Just as happened last week (Jan. 22) in Eddie King Gym Ohio Valley fell just short with their last second shot as the University of Charleston slipped out with the victory.

UC controlled the entire opening stanza behind solid guard play with seven point efforts by Philip Outley (West Monroe, La./South Plains College) and leading scorer Jon Liggins (Euclid, Ohio/Cuyahoga CC) to take a 34-20 advantage into the break. A great defensive effort by Charleston forced 10 OVU turnovers in the first half, while managing 15 turnovers in the contest.

Ohio Valley intended to defend its home court as they chipped away at the double-digit University of Charleston lead until the Fighting Scots struck pay dirt as Micah Mills drilled a three-pointer to give OVU a lead with 9:03 to play. Marco Richardson (Canton, Ohio/Northland CC) would retake the advantage for Charleston just two minutes later as he added to his double-double effort with a mid-range jumper. Richardson booked his third double-double of the season with a 13 point and 10 rebound night.

Richardson’s effort combined with the foul shooting prowess of Liggins during the final minute and a half to hold on to the lead for UC.

Kendall Allison shot 8-for-15 to lead the Fighting Scots with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Charleston gets back on the court at home against Davis & Elkins at 8:00 pm on Saturday, February 5.
