CHARLESTON, W.Va. -
Marco Richardson (Canton, Ohio) was all over the floor in a 67-61 win over Glenville State as he booked a career-high 18 rebounds to go along with 11 points and five assists, Monday evening in Eddie King Gym.
The teams were evenly paced in the first half with each shooting 40 percent from the floor. Charleston (11-3, 6-2) shot just 4-of-14 from behind the arc in the opening stanza, but a +12 rebounding differential allowed the homestanding Golden Eagles allowed for a narrow 33-30 advantage at the break. It was the UC bench that booked 19 points in the first half that helped to counter 10 turnovers to start the night.
In the second half, the teams played nearly even with each team at one point holding a four point lead. Glenville State (1-10, 0-7) competed head-to-head with a larger Golden Eagle lineup to hang on to a 59-58 advantage with two minutes left to play silencing the crowd in Eddie King Gym.
Evan Faulkner (Sandyhook, Ky.) responded to the GSU challenge for the University of Charleston by working his way to an open three-point shot that he buried for a two-point (61-59) lead with 1:54 on the clock. The shot would also bury the moral of Glenville State as they would not lead against down the stretch.
A
Paul "PJ" Reyes (Taylor, Mich.) layup and four consecutive Richardson free throws would put the final touches on the home win for the Golden Eagles and set the final score at 67-61.
On the night UC held a 47-to-29 rebounding advantage to counter an 8-of-27 effort from behind the arc and 21 total turnovers.
For the second straight game
Brandon Ross (Chicago, Ill.) gave Charleston a lift off the bench with a team-high 12 points, while
Noah Fischer (Kenna, W.Va.) followed just behind off the bench with 11 points. Battling foul trouble for much of the night Faulkner rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points and five rebounds.
