Poor Shooting Dooms UC as They Fall to the Griffins 64-58

Box Score Charleston, WV – The Griffins from Seton Hill come to Eddie King Gym and knock off UC 64-58 after a poor shooting night from the Golden Eagles.

University of Charleston got off to a sloppy start maybe suffering a hangover from last week’s upset of #1 West Liberty.  The referees allowed a lot of contact early on, swallowing their whistle on many trips down the court.  There was no offensive rythym for the Golden Eagles and Terrell Lipkins left early in the first half, suffering what seems to be a back injury.  Although the Golden Eagles didn’t play a very good first half, they still took a 3 point lead into the break, 28-25.  Xavier Humphrey led the Golden Eagles in scoring the first 20 minutes with 10 points.

After the first media timeout of the second half, Seton Hill held a two point advantage 35-33 over the Golden Eagles.  UC ‘s struggles from the floor continue, unable to hit on layups and shots around the rim. The Griffins are able to stretch the lead out to six points halfway through the second half before Humphrey knocks down a runner to draw within 3, 41-38.  Seton Hill seems to be getting to every loose ball and knocking away every attempt UC has at the rim, but UC isn’t done fighting as Fred Simpson gets an and 1 going hard to the rim. The Griffins again stretch the lead back out to nine, 55-46 with just 4:30 left in the contest, but Charleston cuts into the lead only down 3 with 1:24 left to go, 57-54.  UC gets baskets but Seton Hill hits their free throws to get the lead out to 6 with 20 seconds remaining.    Charleston isn’t able to knock down the next three looks with the rebound finally falling to Seton Hill who dribbles out the clock, with UC dropping the contest 64-58.

Charleston was led by Xavier Humphrey in the scoring column with 12 points, but for the game UC only shot 34% from the field going 21-61.  Max Kenyi paced Seton Hill with 20 points on six for ten shooting from the field and hitting seven of his ten free throw attempts.

UC drops to 12-3 on the season and 8-3 in WVIAC play.  The loss also ends a seven game win streak for the Golden Eagles.  Charleston will return to action on Thursday as they host Wheeling Jesuit with game time set for 7:30.
