Box Score 2 CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Charleston Volleyball continued its winning ways this past Friday and Saturday defeating University of Virginia at Wise and Concord each by the score of 3-1 to extend their current win streak to nine matches.
FRIDAY
The Cavaliers (7-18, 2-11 MEC) stayed neck and neck with the Golden Eagles, coming back to make the score 13-13 after trailing 10-13. five straight points would then give them a 15-13 lead after a kill by
Maya Hamlett on a set from
Veronica Sanchez. The teeter-totter would continue until the scoreboard red 20-20 on a kill from
Santana Bishop. That's when the Golden eagles would run off five straight points to end the match 25-20. The last three being kills by Katharine Furlong, Victoria Severo and Claririssa Larry.
In the second set there was a slight momentum shift in the night. After the Cavs trailed 10-15 in the middle of the set a very strategic time out by coaches
Kristen Salyer and Katie Van Hofwegen seemed to reenergize the Cavs. The Cavaliers would end up taking their first lead of the set 19-18 on a assist by
Veronica Sanchez and a kill by
Erin Anderson. From there the UVa-Wise women's volleyball team would not look back and take the match 25-21 on a kill from
Maya Hamlett set again by Sanchez.
In the third set UVa-Wise came out fighting but could not hold on to a 10-9 lead after
Karley Allen and
Veronica Sanchez connected on two straight kill/assist combos. The Golden Eagles would from there put it on the Cavaliers and win the set 25-15.
The last set was much of the same back and forth. The Cavs took a three point lead on a kill from Bishop making the score 11-8. Katherine Furlong would later put Charleston up by three on an assist from Melissa Reyes making the score 19-16. The Cavaliers could not regain the lead, as an attack error on
Simona Zduoba would end the set 25-20 in favor of the Golden Eagles.
The visiting Golden Eagles had much of a balanced attack with two players, Katharine Furlong and Victoria Severo having 13 kills apiece with Clairissa Larry adding 11 as well. Melissa Reyes was the primary setter gaining 38 assists and leading both teams in that category.
SATURDAY
UC held off Concord University's upset attempt , winning 3-1 (25-18, 26-24, 20-25, 25-23) over the Mountain Lions Saturday afternoon at the Carter Center.
The loss drops Concord's record to 14-15 overall and 6-8 in Mountain East Conference contests. Charleston improves to 19-7 overall and 11-4 in league matches.
All four sets were back-and-forth contests; for the match there were 19 ties and nine lead changes.
With the score tied at 17-17 in the first set, Charleston took eight of the sets final nine points to win the opener 25-18. The Mountain Lions appeared poised to tie the match at 1-1 in the second set, but CU couldn't hold on to a 24-18 lead as the Golden Eagles fought back to take the set 26-24.
Concord rebounded with a 25-20 win in the third set to force a fourth game where they quickly jumped out to an 11-4 lead over the Golden Eagles. However, Charleston once again countered CU's run, eventually tying the match at 21-21 before pulling ahead for good en route to the 25-23 match-clinching victory.
Katharine Furlong led Charleston to the win with 12 kills and 16 digs.
