Box Score Charleston, WV – Charleston almost gives away a victory to the Pioneers, but hold on to a 71-69 thriller.
Charleston (17-7, 13-7 WVIAC) was able to get out of the gates quick against the visiting Pioneers, building an early 18-point advantage with eight minutes remaining on the clock. Glenville (11-14, 7-13) would respond getting back into the game after an emphatic dunk just as time expired, with the Golden Eagles only leading by just seven points, 37-30.
Terrell Lipkins (Canton, Ohio) led all scorers going into the locker room with 10 points, but got into foul trouble late in the half that forced him to miss the last few minutes when the Pioneers made their late run.
UC continued to hold a slim 9-point advantage over the Pioneers at the first media time with Charleston ahead on the scoreboard 47-38. For the next seven minutes the game would be sloppy with neither team seeming to want to take control of the game, but Charleston would still hold a six point lead with just under seven minutes to go on the clock.
The Golden Eagles would push the lead out to 11, but Glenville would respond with back-to-back three pointers to cut the lead to five, 65-60, with just over two minutes to go in the ballgame. A pair of free throws would make it a one possession game with Charleston struggling to get into any sort of offense, but
Robbie Dreher (Greenville, SC) would get into the lane to get an easy layup only to have the Pioneers knock down another three to trim the lead to two points, 67-65, with under a minute to play.
Dreher would get an and-1 on the UC possession to push the lead to and Glenville would miss a deep three causing the Pioneers to foul.
Aleksander Kesic (Belgrade, Serbia)would miss the double bonus and Glenville would get a layup on the opposite end. On the inbound Lipkins would be assessed a technical foul giving the Pioneers two more free throws trimming the lead to just one point, 70-69, with nine seconds remaining.
The Pioneers would foul
Evan Faulkner (Sandyhook, Ky.) on the inbound but can only hit one of two, giving Glenville the opportunity to win the game. They would find an open player in the corner but couldn't convert the three for the upset victory, as UC hangs on 71-69.
Charleston got a 20 point, 11 rebound performance from Lipkins but had some costly errors down the stretch to let Glenville back in the game. UC will go to Wheeling Jesuit Thursday to take on the Cardinals before facing West Virginia State Saturday.
