Box Score 2 CHARLESTON, W.Va - The University of Charleston would complete the two-day UC Invitational Volleyball Tournament with two wins and one loss after consecutive days of exciting volleyball action.
The tournament was comprised of five schools, Edinboro University, Ohio Dominican University, Alderson-Broaddus University, MEC member West Liberty University, and host school UC. Play began Friday morning at 11:30am with four matches on the schedule with the Golden Eagles playing the nightcap against the Panthers from Ohio Dominican.Â
Charleston would jump out to a huge lead behind the serve of
Melissa Reyes (Lima, Peru) and easily take the first set 25-15. UC would again dominate play in set two, taking advantage of Panther errors and converting 14 kills to win the set 25-16. The Golden Eagles would fall apart in set three, committing eight attack errors compared to four kills to drop the set to ODU, 11-25. UC would regroup in a tight set four and eventually come away with a 25-23 set win to win the match 3-1.
The tournament would resume Saturday morning with UC playing the third match of the day against the Fighting Scots from Ediboro University. Charleston would dismantle the Scots in three straight sets, 25-23 25-20 25-23. The win was a result of spectacular hitting from Golden Eagle attackers
Victoria Severo (Meadville, PA),
Clairissa Larry (University Heights, OH),
Katharine Furlong (Sedona, AZ) and
Brenna Youlton (Chatham, Canada) who helped Charleston convert on 28% of their attack attemps while committing only eight errors.
The final match of the tournament pitted the Battlers from Alderson-Broaddus against Charleston.  The Golden Eagles are very familiar with A-B as they both came from the WVIAC conference before parting ways with UC going to the newly formed Mountain East and the Battlers joining the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. As anticipated the match was full of drama and excitement in a five-set thriller that saw the Battlers get the best of the Golden Eagles, taking the fifth and deciding set 15-8 from UC.
Charleston would complete the two-day tournament with a 2-1 record to take their overall record to 6-1 on the season. The Golden Eagles will travel next weekend to West Liberty to take part in the MEC/PSAC Crossover tournament.
