Golden Eagles Eliminated in MEC Quarterfinal

Box Score CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Charleston's season came to crashing halt Friday evening at the Charleston Civic Center in the MEC quarterfinal, falling to Concord University 75-61.

Tino DiTrapano led Charleston with 17 points in his farewell game for the Golden Eagles.  Justin Coleman was the only other UC player in double-figures, finishing with 11 points and eight rebounds.

Charleston got off to a slow start in the MEC Quarterfinal matchup with the Mountain Lions, falling behind early 14-6 thanks to Rob Reed's 3-for-3 shooting from the behind the arc to begin the game.  UC slowly crept back into the game as Jevonte Hughes entered the game with high energy, scoring a quick six points to get the Golden Eagles within two, 16-18, with 8:41 left in the half.

The Mountain Lions pounded the post with Terry Hopewell for much the half as UC struggled to find an answer for his inside game, pacing Concord with 10 points and five rebounds over the first 20 minutes.  Tino diTrapano came alive late in the half to keep the Golden Eagles close, leading all scorers at the break with 11 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the field. His big first half pushed him over the 1,000-point mark for his Golden Eagle career.

Reed started the second half much like the first, scoring 11 points in the first four minutes as the Mountain Lions jumped out a 14-point lead, 48-34.   Again the Golden Eagles climbed back into the game, going on a 11-2 run to get within five, 50-45, with 10:30 to play capped off by a Darrion Stokes-Graham wing three.

Concord went back to their workhorse Hopewell to grab momentum back and extend the Mountain Lion lead to 12, 61-49, at the 6:30 mark of the second half.  Frustration mounted for the Golden Eagles, falling behind by as many as 18 late in the game before eventually falling to the Mountain Lions 75-61.

UC finishes the season with a 16-14 record.
