BUCKHANNON, W.Va.– The Golden Eagles had a solid day on the track Monday, pushing ahead two spots to sit in second overall heading into the final day of the three-day MEC Track & Field Championships at Cebe Ross Field
Charleston got a MEC record breaking performance from Hunter Riffle in the 3000m Steeplechase event. The freshman made the most of his debut in the Mountain East Championships, turning in a time of 9:21.76 to eclipse the previous mark by nearly 18 seconds. Jake Casto didn't fair too bad in the same event, finishing fourth in his senior campaign for an important five additional points and fellow senior Cody Tropeck added two more points with a seventh-place finish.
Chris Roy found himself on the medal stand with a third-place finish after the 10
thevent concluded in the Decathlon, his highest finish at the MEC Championships. Christov Cornish entered the championships with the longest triple jump of the season but had to settle for a tie for second place to earn Charleston seven points in the event. Teammates David Morales-Perez and James Bryant placed sixth and seventh respectively to collectively add five more points to UC's two-day total of 75 points. Bryson Dennison rounded out the scoring for the Golden Eagles with a strong second-place finish in the Pole Vault with a vault of 4.50m.
Charleston returns to the track tomorrow afternoon to wrap up the three-day MEC Championships on the campus of West Virginia Wesleyan College.
