BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- Frostburg State has been selected as the favorite to win the 2021 Mountain East Conference women's lacrosse championship, the league announced today after a vote of the league coaches.
Frostburg State finished atop the poll with 24 points, including four first-place votes. The Bobcats went 2-2 in four games in their first season in Division II last year before the season was halted.
Notre Dame was tabbed second with 19 points and had one first-place vote. The Falcons finished just ahead of Charleston's 16 points (one first-place vote) while the remainder of the standings were followed up by Davis & Elkins (14), Alderson Broaddus (11) and West Virginia Wesleyan (6).
Charleston enters the 2021 campaign after finishing 3-2 under head coach Akasha Kasper in her first season. Despite the setback from COVID-19, the Golden Eagles finished last season on a high note, scoring 18 goals in each of their final two games of the season.
Charleston hits the field in 2021 without their top offensive scorer from a year ago, Emma Renda, due to graduation. Renda notched 118 career goals during her four years as a Golden Eagle. Charleston returns nine players from last year's roster, including Elisha Davis, who scored 11 goals, Isabelle Pisani, and Kyra Tye between the pipes.
