Golden Eagles Set Six New School Records at Grand Valley State

Allendale, Michigan - The UC Track and Field team traveled to Grand Valley State University this past weekend to compete at their indoor facility against some of the top runners in the country. Despite the fierce competition, the team was able to stand out. Setting over a handful of new school records, they were able to push to earn top placements on the weekend. Highlights are below. 

New School Records

Matthys Bourse holds the new school record for the mile. Bourse ran a  4:11.31 mile on the weekend to not only obtain the new school record, he now holds the #2 spot in the MEC. The freshman placed an impressive 14th out of over 150 runners in the race. 

Thomas Termote, Colin Hunkele, Warren Thiel, and Matthys Bourse set the new school record in the Distance Medley Relay (4,000 meters) with a time of 9:58.71. This time earns an NCAA provisional qualifying time, and the gentlemen now hold the #1 in MEC and #25 in NCAA for Division 2. 

Elise Leveel earns herself another school record in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:49.80. Leveel currently holds the #1 in MEC and #16 in NCAA Division 2 for this race. Her time earned her a top-10 finish with an 8th overall place out of over 300 runners in 5,000. 

Julie LaFare set a new school record in the 3,000 meters race with her impressive time of 9:59.23. LaFare also holds the #1 spot in the MEC for her time and earned 12th overall out of over 150 runners in 3,000. 

Louanne Pouzancre set the new school record in the 400m race with her speedy time of 55.92. Pouzancre holds an NCAA Provisional Qualifying time and is currently #18 in NCAA Division 2. Not only is she placed overall in Division 2, but she also holds the #1 in the MEC.

The sophomore broke her own previous school record and is the fastest time in MEC history. Out of 100 competitors, she earned a top-10 finish with a 7th overall place.

Lily Dowdell Louanne Pouzancre, Maelle Fuchs, and Flora Tissier earned the new school record in the Distance Medley Relay (4,000 meters) with a time of 11:55.61. The ladies placed 10th overall and earned an NCAA provisional qualifying time. 

Continued Highlights

Men:

  • Thomas Termote ran a 14:19.99 in the 5,000 meters to earn an NCAA provisional qualifying time and now holds #3 in MEC. Termote ran a time to earn the 3rd fastest time in school history and earned the 10th overall finish with 300 runners in the 5k.

  • Warren Thiel ran the 800m race with a time of 1:51.95. Thiel ran an NCAA provisional qualifying time. Thiel now holds the #1 time in the MEC. On the weekend, he earned a 6th place finish out of over 100 runners in the race.

  • Colin Hunkele ran the 400m race on the weekend in 49.11. Hunkele holds the #1 time in the MEC and earned 12th overall.

Women:

  • Lily Dowdell ran a mile time of 4:56.92. Dowdell holds the #2 time in the MEC and in school history. She also earns an NCAA Provisional Qualifying Time. The junior placed 11th overall out of 150 runners.

  • Teammate Flora Tissier was right behind Dowdell with a time of 5:00.50. Tissier finished 12th overall out of over 150 runners. 

MEC Athlete of the Week Nominations

Men

Matthys Bourse is a competitor for athlete of the week after running a 4:11.31 in the men's mile breaking the school record and holding the #2 time in the MEC.

Bourse also ran the 1600m leg of the Distance Medley Relay. The team ran a 9:58.71 and hit an NCAA provisional qualifying time. The four gentlemen are currently # 1 in MEC and #25 in NCAA Division 2. 

Women 

Louanne Pouzancre holds a spot for possible MEC Athlete of the Week with her notable 400m run with a time of 55.92. Pouzancre holds an NCAA Provisional Qualifying time and is currently #18 in NCAA Division 2 and #1 in the MEC. She broke her own previous school record and earns the fastest time in the 400m meters in school history. Her time earned her 7th overall out of over 100 competitors finish on the weekend. 

Pouzancre also ran the 400m leg of the Distance Medley Relay team that created a new school record with their time of 11:55.61. Pouzancre and her teammates hit an NCAA provisional qualifying time and is the fastest time in MEC history. Their Distance Medley Race is currently #24 in NCAA Division 2.
 

What's Next:

It is an exciting week for the Golden Eagles as they compete in the Mountain East Conference Championship in Huntington, WV this weekend. The team kicks off their races Friday, February 17th, and will continue onto Saturday, February 18th to try and earn the MEC Championship title.
