Charleston Track & Field Shines at Youngstown Collegiate Invitationa

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The University of Charleston Men's and Women's Track & Field teams delivered standout performances at the Youngstown Collegiate Invitational, securing numerous top finishes and setting new milestones.

Men's Highlights

  • Mile: Sam Idiens claimed first place with a blistering 4:11.64, marking the fastest time in the Mountain East Conference (MEC). Teammates Hugo Hewitt (4:15.10, 3rd overall, #3 MEC) and Iggy Chalker (4:21.22, 10th overall) also delivered strong performances.
  • Shot Put: Frankie Winter dominated the event with a throw of 15.57m, earning 1st overall and the top spot in the MEC.
  • Weight Throw: Winter also secured 1st place in the weight throw (17.21m, #1 MEC), while Luke Messinger (17.21m, 2nd overall, #2 MEC) and Jullian Matthews (16.64m, 3rd overall, #3 MEC) rounded out an all-Golden Eagles podium.
  • 3,000 Meters: Cosmas Chelanga won the event in 8:29, the fastest time in the MEC this season.
  • 60m Hurdles: Massimo Pantano broke the school record with a time of 8.21, placing 4th overall and ranking #1 in the MEC.
  • 60 Meters: Zach Parsons clocked 6.83, earning 2nd overall and #2 in the MEC, while Timber Huysmans (6.85, 8th overall) and Pantano (7.02, 11th overall) added depth to Charleston's sprints.
  • 400 Meters: Huysmans recorded a 48.65, placing 3rd overall and claiming the #1 spot in the MEC.

Women's Highlights

  • 60 Meters: Colette Patti placed 4th overall in 7.76, ranking #2 in the MEC.
  • 400 Meters: Maya Clark led the Golden Eagles with a 57.98, finishing 4th overall and earning the top time in the MEC.
  • 800 Meters: Laura Delgado de Torres ran a personal best of 2:26.54, placing 12th overall and ranking #4 in the MEC.
  • Weight Throw: Abby McKinney captured 1st place with a throw of 17.12m, an NCAA Provisional Mark and the best in the MEC.
  • Mile: Beth Sykes led Charleston with a 5:04 finish, taking 2nd overall and the #1 MEC spot, while Madison Woolwine (5:13, 7th overall) and Mercy Jepleting (5:21, 15th overall) followed with strong efforts.
  • Triple Jump: Stefani Vasileva secured 3rd overall with a jump of 10.84m, the 2nd-best mark in the MEC.

MEC Athletes of the Week

  • Men: Frankie Winter earned the honor for his dominant victories in the Shot Put (15.57m) and Weight Throw (17.21m).
  • Women: Laura Delgado de Torres was recognized for her multi-event success, including a personal best in the 60m hurdles (9.15, 8th overall, #2 MEC), a 6th-place finish in the high jump (1.58m), and a personal record in the 800m (2:26.54, 12th overall, #4 MEC).
