Charleston Track & Field Dominates MEC Championships, Sweeps Both Titles

Morgantown, W.Va. — Charleston track and field delivered a dominant performance at the 2026 MEC Outdoor Championships, sweeping both team titles as the men scored 223 points and the women totaled 186 to secure conference crowns.

Team Titles & Major Awards
The Golden Eagles finished well ahead on both sides, with the men outscoring Point Park (93) and the women holding off Point Park (166).

Julian Matthews was named Men's Field Athlete of the Year, while Frank Hicks earned Men's Freshman of the Year. On the women's side, Colette Patti was named Track Athlete of the Year, Mallori Dunn-Martin earned Freshman of the Year, and Laura Delgado de Torres was named Most Valuable Performer. Head coach Nick Bias was named Coach of the Year for both programs.

Men's Track Events:

110m Hurdles: Frank Hicks placed 3rd in 14.79.

200m: Charleston swept the top two spots with Brady Prior winning in 21.37 and Eric Kreuter placing 2nd in 21.65, while Alejandro Salgado finished 4th in 21.92.

400m: Alejandro Salgado won the title in 47.13, with Brady Prior finishing 2nd in 48.04.

400m Hurdles: Charleston swept the event as Frank Hicks won in 53.27 and Cosmo Johnson placed 2nd in 53.28.

800m: Josh Messina led Charleston with a 4th-place finish in 1:54.87, followed by Jack Talbot (5th, 1:55.65) and Matthew O'Shea (6th, 1:55.76).

1500m: Caleb Gilbert won in 3:51.65, Jules Geffroy Remot placed 3rd in 3:53.20, and Hugo Hewitt finished 4th in 3:54.57.

5000m: Matthew Meli took the title in 14:47.02, with Hugo Hewitt placing 3rd in 14:51.94.

10,000m: Thomas Crockett placed 2nd in 31:43.63.

4x100 Relay: Parsons, Salgado, Prior, and Kreuter won in 40.91.

4x400 Relay: Salgado, Kreuter, Gomez, and Prior took the title in 3:14.39.


Men's Field Events:

Discus: Julian Matthews won with a throw of 45.20m.

Hammer Throw: Julian Matthews won in 58.28m, Luke Messenger placed 3rd in 53.86m, and Brian Valiente finished 5th in 50.22m.

Javelin: Bryant Welch placed 4th with a throw of 53.51m.

Shot Put: Aiden Corbett won with a mark of 15.84m, Jack Ingram placed 3rd in 14.60m, and Luke Messenger finished 5th in 14.41m.

Decathlon: Luke Davis won with 5,890 points.
 

Women's Track Events:

100m: Colette Patti won in 11.82.

100m Hurdles: Mallori Dunn-Martin won in 14.54, with Minke Engelbrecht placing 2nd in 14.59.

200m: Colette Patti won in 24.06.

400m Hurdles: Laura Delgado de Torres won in 1:03.91, while Mallori Dunn-Martin placed 2nd in 1:04.00.

800m: Abbey Bolton placed 4th in 2:16.38, followed by Amanda Ferrante in 5th with 2:17.34.

1500m: Amanda Ferrante placed 4th in 4:39.90.

Steeplechase: Sara Campana placed 3rd in 11:27.46.

4x100 Relay: Delgado, Dunn-Martin, Engelbrecht, and Patti won in 46.89.

4x400 Relay: Charleston placed 2nd in 3:54.82.
 

Women's Field Events:

Discus: Magdalene Furst placed 2nd with a throw of 42.67m.

Hammer Throw: Mia Huber won in 53.52m, with Ella Nilsson placing 3rd in 49.17m.

High Jump: Adrienne Truman placed 3rd with a mark of 1.60m.

Javelin: Tesscani Moore won with a throw of 40.84m.

Long Jump: Laura Delgado de Torres placed 3rd with a mark of 5.58m.

Shot Put: Abby McKinney placed 3rd with a mark of 11.91m.

Triple Jump: Laura Delgado de Torres placed 4th with a mark of 11.42m.

Heptathlon: Laura Delgado de Torres placed 3rd overall with 4,515 points.

Charleston travels to the Mount Olive Final Qualifier May 8-9 for another opportunity to post marks high enough to qualify for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships.
