SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - After a down the wire overtime win yesterday against Shippensburg head coach Mark Downey hoped his squad would be able to get a better start today against a tough opponent in East Stroudsburg. His team responded with 41 first half points to set the tone for the win.
ESU (0-2) received three votes as the top team in the PSAC East coaches poll and were picked to finish second in the league headed into the game, which on paper showed them as a stronger opponent than the Shippensburg team UC faced the day before.
The Warriors entered the afternoon contest coming off a narrow four-point loss to No. 6 ranked West Liberty and looking for revenge. The University of Charleston men's basketball team took little time in making sure the momentum stayed on their side jumping out to an immediate 10 point advantage behind 4-of-4 shooting by
Xavier Humphrey (Wake Forest, NC).
Humphrey and
Marco Richardson (Canton, Ohio) accounted for 23 of the 41 points in the opening stanza as the Golden Eagles pulled away to a 19 point advantage headed into the locker room at half. Charleston shot 57 percent from the floor in the first half and stifled the East Stroudsburg offense into going just 8-for-30 (26 percent).
Coach Downey made it clear during halftime that the Golden Eagles could not relent on their attack reminding the team of their 18 point comeback in the win on Saturday against Shippensburg.
ESU turned the tables on UC in the second half shooting 49 percent and forcing eight Golden Eagle turnovers to crawl back into the game. The Warriors outscored the University of Charleston 44-to-33 in the second period, but their scoring runs were unable to make enough of a dent into the Charleston lead to threaten for the win. East Stroudsburg got within 10 points with a minute and a half left to play, but a day after shooting just 58 percent from the foul line it was the charity stripe points that allowed the Golden Eagles to prevail.
UC nailed 13-of-16 free throws in the second half to hold the Warriors charge at bay, while
Paul "PJ" Reyes (Taylor, MI) provided consistent scoring across the board when a jump shot was needed for the win.
Richardson paced all scorers for Charleston with 18 points and eight assists, while Reyes was a factor at both ends of the court with a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds. Senior
Brandon Ross (Chicago, Ill.) and Humphrey rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Reyes' 20.5 points per game throughout the tournament earned him Tournament Most Valuable Player honors, while Richardson landed one of the five All-Tournament slots.
The win keeps the Golden Eagles record spotless headed into a WVIAC road contest at Bluefield State on Wednesday, Nov. 16 with tipoff slated for 7:30 pm.
