Box Score
BLUEFIELD, W.Va. - The University of Charleston men's basketball team had six players score in double-figures picking up their first conference win of the season in impressive fashion. The Golden Eagles hit 10 three-pointers in a dominant 106-68 performance on the road Wednesday night.
Charleston (3-0) drilled six shots from behind the arc in the opening half in pulling out to a 13-point halftime lead at 47-34. Just as he did last weekend in the Wolf's Bus Lines Classic
Xavier Humphrey (Wake Forest, N.C.) continued to be a first half terror on opponents as he kept UC just ahead of the Big Blues with 11 first half points on 4-of-7 shooting.
Paul "PJ" Reyes (Taylor, Mich.) paced the Golden Eagles early proving to be the consistent scorer in head coach Mark Downey's offense with 13 points before break. Humphrey booked an early career-high 13 points in the contest as he only took two shots in eight minutes thru the second half of play.
Like in a tag-team match Reyes and Humphrey turned the keys over to the powerful Charleston offense to a new set of scorers in the second half.
Marco Richardson (Canton, Ohio) and newcomer
Eladio Espinosa (Norlina, N.C.) gladly took the offensive handoff going to work quickly against the Bluefield State defense. The two combined to hit 8-of-11 shots in the second stanza as UC pulled away quickly with 59 points in the half leading to the run away win. Richardson finished the contest with 13 points and a team-high six assists, while Espinosa had 12 points, eight rebounds and game-high three steals.
Three-point specialists
Noah Fischer (Kenna, W.Va.) and
Evan Faulkner (Sandyhook, Ky.) rounded out the double-digit scorers in the game with each setting early career marks at 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Charleston outshot BSU just 46 percent to 45 percent, but held an enormous 53-to-23 rebound advantage as Reyes and
Montavious Marc (Jacksonville, Fla.) split the team-high with nine rebounds apiece. The rebounding disparity contributed to the Golden Eagles putting up 25 second-chance points to just two by BSU.
The University of Charleston got plenty of production from its bench as they outscored Bluefield State 56-7 from the non-starters.
