CHARLESTON, W.Va. - An all around team effort sealed the win, but leading scorer
Paul "PJ" Reyes (Taylor, Mich.) put on an aerial display to notch 16 points and 13 rebounds in declawing Concord 82-70, Saturday night in Eddie King Gym.
Concord (5-4, 4-3) took a two-point lead into halftime 38-36 by outshooting Charleston (8-2, 3-2) 43 percent to just 35 percent. What proved to be a difference maker over the course of the game was the 10 players who got their names in the box score in the opening stanza.
Xavier Humphrey (Wake Forest, N.C.) paced the Golden Eagles at the break with nine points; no other Charleston player had over four points mid-way through the contest. Humphrey was key in keeping UC within striking distance to open the game, yet finished with nine points and three assists on the night.
The dangerous depth that head coach Mark Downey's team possesses struck in the second half as they ran the court tirelessly for a 15-2 edge in the first three minutes of the final half. The scoring run handed UC an 11 point lead (51-40) it would not surrender.
Reyes flew above the rim the entire second half slamming down alley-oop dunks, jamming in tough rebounds and pulling down impossible rebounds overtop the entire Concord team and in some cases over his own teammates. The Golden Eagles held a 19 point advantage with six minutes remaining to all but seal the 82-70 victory.
UC held a +8 rebounding edge over the Mountain Lions, while forcing 20 turnovers with their press defense.
Reyes paced UC offensively, but it a complete team effort four players were in double-figures scoring.
Evan Faulkner (Sandyhook, Ky.) hit big three-pointers when the Golden Eagles needed it nailing three of his four shots from behind the arc in succession for 14 points.
Marco Richardson (Canton, Ohio) and
Eladio Espinosa (Norlina, N.C.) rounded out the double-digit scorers, each with 12 points. Richardson also added eight rebounds, three steals and three assists, while Espinosa corralled six boards with two steals.
Charleston wraps up their games for 2011 with a trip to non-conference opponent Bluefield College on Monday, Dec. 19 for a 6:00 pm matchup.
