Box Score

CHARLESTON, W.Va.
– Senior Jon Liggins (Cleveland, Ohio/Cuyahoga CC) opened the game by going 10-for-10, which included 6-of-6 from behind the three-point line as he led the Charleston men’s basketball team to a convincing 105-86 win over Concord, Wednesday night.

The Golden Eagles (14-11, 12-9) had the hot-hand in the opening half going on to hit 21-of-34 shots led by the impressive shooting display of Liggins. Charleston stuck to the winning formula that has led to its current seven game winning streak as the continually pushed the ball inside to create good looks for its multiple shooter sets. In the opening stanza UC outscored the visiting Mountain Lions (11-14, 8-13) 28-10 in the paint to take a comfortable 62-33 advantage going into the locker room.

CU managed to cool Charleston down some in the second half to 50 percent from the floor, which on any other night would still be outstanding. The Golden Eagles slammed the boards to obliterate Concord 49-to-28 in rebounds, which led to a lot of strong shots in the paint. The second half repeated what the home team had done in the first by getting the ball inside to its much larger and more powerful lineup to again win the battle in the paint 28-12, which totaled a 56-22 advantage for the game.

Liggins took full advantage of a Concord team struggling to fight off UC’s power in the paint to score 26 points, while big-man John White (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) had a dazzling 21 point and 10 rebound performance. Marco Richardson (Canton, Ohio/Northland CC) continued to provide a powerful lift for Charleston with 13 points and three steals, while James Eversley (Richmond, Va./VCU) and Brandon Ross (Chicago, Ill./Lincoln Park) each poured in 12 points off the bench.

Corey Neeley provided the lone highlight for Concord as he booked 26 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals.

The University of Charleston now awaits Kanawha Valley rival WV State for the Brickstreet Insurance Rivalry Night on Saturday, February 26 at 4:00 pm.
