CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Terrell Lipkins (Canton, Ohio) returned to the University of Charleston lineup by putting together a statement type effort for his first triple-double as men's basketball blasted Bluefield (Va.) 107-70, Tuesday evening.
Head coach Mark Downey stressed after the Golden Eagles' first loss of the season last weekend against Shepherd that his team could ill-afford to come out flat with a slow start against the Rams who feature NAIA All-American Byron Carpenter. UC (4-1) responded to their coaches challenge and a fast-start is exactly what ensued.
With Lipkins back in action UC clearly was in a comfort zone early with all starters back to their normal positions, which equated to a 13-0 run to start the contest. Just for good measure Lipkins made sure the Rams knew he was in the building with a quick slash to the hoop for the opening bucket of the night.
A jumper by
Quincy Washington (Florence, SC) midway through the opening half handed the University of Charleston a 25-9 advantage they never looked back from as the team shot 56 percent from the floor en route to a 51-18 halftime lead.
Charleston stuck to their game plan throughout the second half with starters working shifts with the bench as all 10 players available for the game saw action in keeping the home advantage beyond 30 points. A fast break layup by
Corey Jackson (Louisville, KY) with 2:33 left in the contest lifted the Golden Eagles beyond the 100 point mark for the second time this season.
The final tally of the night came as true freshman
Tino diTrapano (Charleston, WV) netted a jumper with 1:03 to play for his first career points in a Golden Eagle uniform, which was enough to tie the season high scoring mark of 107 (also reached against Puerto Rico-Mayaguez).
For the University of Charleston the non-starters stepped up after being called upon for not producing against Shepherd with 40 points, led by
Hayden Annett (Portland, Australia) who provided support from long-range by hitting 5-of-7 three-pointers (18 points in game).
Fred Simpson (Bronx, NY) joined Washington as double-digit scorers off the bench as eached booked 10 points. Washington also finished with nine rebounds in 15 minutes of action.
Lipkins led all scorers on the night with 21 points and 16 rebounds to go along with directing the Charleston offense to a tune of 10 assists.
Xavier Humphrey (Wake Forest, N.C.) was powerful through the lane all night as he followed just behind Lipkins with 20 points and eight rebounds. Jackson rounded out the double-digit scorers for the evening at 10 points and six rebounds.
In the victory, Charleston outrebounded the Rams 56-31. From the floor the Golden Eagles hit 52 percent (45-of-86) of their attempts, while holding Bluefield (Va.) to just 38 percent (27-for-70).
"I was impressed with how our guys hit the ground running today after taking a tough loss at Shepherd. It was real nice to get Terrell (Lipkins) back in the lineup, he changes a lot of what we can do with just his pure athleticism." said Downey.
"I didn't know we could get those kind of rebounding numbers out of him, but I sure am proud of the kid. He has had a tough couple weeks personally and to see him come out playing for something and have this kind of performance is so exciting."
The University of Charleston gets to hang around Eddie King Gym for their next game on Saturday, Dec. 8 when Ohio Valley heads to town for a 6:00 pm WVIAC matchup.
