Men's Basketball Cruises Past D&E in Second Half

Box Score

ELKINS, W.Va. - Lighting up the scorebook with seven three-point shots allowed the University of Charleston men's basketball team to run away from Davis & Elkins in the second half for an 87-65 victory, Saturday afternoon.

Both teams shot 48 percent from the field in the opening half as UC (18-5, 13-4) managed to keep the Senators (4-14, 2-14) just behind at 34-33 going into the break.

The Golden Eagles didn't need long in the second stanza to take control of the game for good as an Eladio Espinosa (Norlina, N.C.) lay up three minutes into half handed the visitors a double-digit lead it would not surrender. Charleston kept the pressure going on both ends of the floor to force 13 turnovers, while extending the lead on the offensive end to over 20 points in final three minutes of play.

UC held a +14 (36-to-28) rebounding margin that kept D&E from converting any second chance opportunities as the Golden Eagles closed the 22-point win in fitting fashion as Paul "PJ" Reyes (Taylor, Mich.) drilled a shot from behind the arc as the final points.

Reyes led Charleston offensively with 21 points on 9-of-16 shooting, while Espinosa controlled the post with 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Brandon Ross (Chicago, Ill.) was a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range to end the afternoon with 13 points, while red-hot reserve Hayden Annett (Portland, Australia) continued his late-season production 11 points in just 12 minutes of action.

For the contest the University of Charleston shot 53 percent (34-of-64), which included 10-of-23 from behind the arc.

Charleston now enters their off-week from conference action before they hit the road on Saturday, Feb. 11 for a 4:00 pm matchup against Glenville State.
