SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The red hot University of Charleston Golden Eagles dismantled a Notre Dame College team Friday night at Murphy Gymnasium, winning a 3-0 decision in their final regular season match of the year.
The Falcons (5-26, 3-13) saw their home record drop to 3-6 with the loss, while the Golden Eagles (21-8, 12-4) have now run off 10 consecutive victories heading into the conference tournament.
The Golden Eagles came in on a tear, having lost just three sets since Oct. 18, and while NDC lost in three sets, the Falcons tested one of the top teams in the conference, losing the final two sets by just two points.
Charleston took control early, and snagged a 1-0 lead with a 25-15 victory in the opening set. Notre Dame had a lead in the second set, but Charleston came back and took a 2-0 advantage as they outlasted the Falcons, 26-24. The Golden Eagles were able to edge NDC in the final set, 25-23 to claim the victory.
Claire Larry, Victoria Severo, and Olivia Livengood each posted double digit kills from their attacking positions while libero Elle Martin had 24 digs to lead Charleston to the regular season finale victory. Severo also added seven blocks to give her 99 on the season. Melissa Reyes and Brenna Barker combined for nearly all of the sets for Charleston's kills, totalling 41 of the 44 assists.
Charleston will likely enter the Mountain East Conference Volleyball Championship as the #3 seed with the tournament set to begin Thursday and conclude at the host school Wheeling Jesuit next Saturday to determine the inaugural MEC Volleyball champion.
