UC Men Erase Halftime Deficit to Pick Up Win Over Shaw

RALEIGH, N.C. – University of Charleston Golden Eagles erased a seven point halftime deficit to get an impressive road win over the Shaw Bears by the score of 66-61 Saturday afternoon at Spaulding Gymnasium.

Charleston trailed 13-14 seven minutes into the game before going on a bit of run to grab their biggest lead of the half at 24-19 after Tino diTrapano hit a three-pointer from the left wing. Still holding the lead at 25-21, Shaw responded with seven straight points to snatch their first lead since the 12:32 mark at 28-25. Xavier Humphrey stopped the Bear run with a three on the offensive end to bring the game even at 28 with 3:17 showing on the game clock.

Charleston committed four turnovers over the next three minutes that led to nine consecutive points for Shaw on their way to a 37-30 lead over the Golden Eagles going into the break. Denzel Douglas and Humphrey each led UC's scoring attack with eight points.

UC scored a quick seven points coming out of the locker room to tie the game at 37-37 following an Aleksander Kesic layup. The run continued for the Golden Eagles, scoring the first 10 points of the half to take a three point lead, 40-37, five minutes into the second frame. Shaw finally got their first points of the half at the 14:09 mark on a Koron Reed free throw to stop the bleeding.

The Golden Eagles clung to a three point lead, 47-44, after a pair of diTrapano free throws at the midway point of the second half. Shaw erased the UC lead within the next minute tying the game at 49-49 on five straight points from Jeffery Legree. The next four minutes saw the lead exchange hands five times with neither team able to run away with the contest.

Down one late in the half, Charleston rattled off seven consecutive points to take a six point lead, 61-55, after a deep Austin Brewer three with just five minutes remaining. Shaw found themselves down only one possession, 63-61, following a three-pointer by Andre Paulk with nearly three minutes remaining but could never get over the hump going scoreless during that time. Forced to foul, Charleston converted late from the charity stripe to get the 66-61 road win.

Charleston had four players score in double digits including diTrapano who came off of the bench to score 12 in 25 valuable minutes. Shaw got 14-point games from Curtis Hines and reserves Paulk and LeGree to lead the Bears in defeat.

Charleston opens up the home and Mountain East Conference schedule next Saturday at 4:00 pm with a contest against #3 nationally ranked West Liberty University. Both teams come into the game unbeaten.
