Box Score CHARLESTON, W.Va. – In a rematch from earlier in the season Charleston couldn't come away with the same result, falling to the Shaw University Bears in overtime, 77-73.
Â
Charleston used a balanced scoring attack led by Tino diTrapano's seven first half points to give the Golden Eagles a four point halftime lead at 28-24.  Shaw's Curtis Hines came off of the bench for the Bears to score 11 points to lead them into the break.
Â
Shaw scored eight of the first twelve points out of halftime to even the score at 32-32 and eventually grabbed their first lead since early in the first half at the 16 minute mark, 37-36. The Golden Eagles responded with three-pointers on consecutive possessions to quickly take the lead back.Â
Â
UC couldn't distance themselves from the visiting Bears, holding a slim five point lead at the final media timeout with just over four minutes to go. Hines continued his strong play from the first half and brought the Bears within one point, 55-54, after knocking down a three from the right corner with a minute to go.
Â
Senior Xavier Humphrey, troubled by fouls in the second half, calmly drained a contested three-pointer with 51 seconds left to give the Golden Eagles a four-point lead, 58-54. After trading a few baskets in the last minute, Shaw intercepted a UC inbounds, went the length of the court and Hines scored a lay as time expired to send the game into overtime, 60-60.
Â
Shaw started to run away from the Golden Eagles in the extra five minutes, scoring the first eight points before UC made a basket. UC fought back to trim the Bear lead to one, 70-71, after a long three by Xavier Humphrey with under one minute remaining. The Bears made enough free throws down the stretch to hold on to beat Charleston, 77-73.
Â
The Golden Eagles were led by Humphrey's 17 points, while Hines paced the Bears with 24 points and 13 rebounds. UC falls to 5-3 overall with the loss and doesn't return to court until the new year when they travel to Buckhannon to take on WV Wesleyan.
