Box Score Wheeling, WV - With an NCAA Tournment berth on the line, Charleston couldn't pick up the double ovetime win over the Cardinals as they fall 86-80.
In a matchup between the 4th and 5th ranked teams in the WVIAC, it was no doubt an evenly matched contest as the teams took two extra frames to decide the outcome. Much like the entire game, it was a very close first half as Charleston (17-8, 13-8 WVIAC) held an early edge, 29-27, behind 19 points from
Evan Faulkner (Sandyhook, Ky.) who tied his career high in made three's in a game with five coming in the first half.
The Golden Eagles would get out to their biggest lead of the game at 44-37 midway through the second half, but Wheeling Jesuit (17-8, 14-7 WVIAC) would respond with a 7-0 run before
Xavier Humphrey (Wake Forest, N.C.) would knock down one of his four three's to stop the Cardinal run. Turnovers would plague UC in the second half and allowed Wheeling to turn a deficit into five point lead with just 3:30 to go. Charleston would fight back though after a steal and a layup by Lipkins would close the gap to one, 64-63 with just a little over a minute to go. The Cardinals would answer with a jumper, but on the other end Humphey would tie the game at 66 after a three-pointer off a feed from
Terrell Lipkins (Canton, Ohio) that sent the game into an extra five minutes.
UC would strike first with a three pointer only to see Wheeling respond with a 7-0 run to put them up four points, 73-69, with just under two minutes to go in overtime. Washington would hit a jumper to cut it to two points, and after a Seifert free throw Charleston found themselves down three when Lipkins would knock down a clutch three with 11 seconds to go to again tie the game, 74-74, and force another overtime.
In the second OT, Charleston would run out of magic as the Cardinals would jump out to a six point lead after a three-pointer and UC couldn't get back into it this time as WJU would hit their free throws down the stretch to seal the double overtime victory 86-80.
The Golden Eagles would get big games from
Robbie Dreher (Greenville, SC) (20 points, 8 rebounds), Faulkner (22 points, 6 assists) and Humphrey (12 points, 11 rebounds). Faulkner would hit a career-high six made three pointers in the loss.
Charleston will face WV State Saturday in Institute with game time set for 4:00 pm.
