Golden Eagle Men Blow Past WV State, Advance to WVIAC 2nd Round

Box Score Charleston, WV –  Third time not a charm for State, as UC handles the Yellow Jackets 97-83 advancing to the Civic Center for the second round.

The Yellow Jackets (10-19, 7-16 WVIAC) came out playing with more intensity after getting beaten convincingly in Institute just four days ago.  The first half was tight throughout the full 20 minutes, due in part to WV State’s hot shooting, going 13-24 from the field going into the locker.  Charleston was able to withstand the Jacket’s shooting performance and carry a six-point lead into the break, 42-36.

Terrell Lipkins (Canton, Ohio) had a huge first half, leading all scorers with 19 points hitting three of his five 3-point field goal attempts.

The second half was more to Coach Downey’s liking as the Golden Eagles (19-8, 15-8 WVIAC) would lead by as many as 22 points midway through the final half, 79-57.  Again, Charleston was able to go to its bench in the second half, giving our starters the much needed rest in anticipation for a week full of games to come.  UC would eventually close out the WV State Yellow Jackets with a 14-point victory, 97-83.

Charleston was led Lipkins who filled the stat sheet with 24 points, six assists and five rebounds.  Robbie Dreher (Greenville, SC) continued his late surge this season with 17 points, going three-for-three from behind the arc.  Evan Faulkner (Sandyhook, Ky.)also got in a solid game on efficient shooting, hitting six of his eight attempts, accounting for 20 points.

UC will head to the Civic Center Thursday for second round action with tip-off set for 6:30pm, likely facing a familiar foe in Wheeling Jesuit who two times earlier this season knocked off the Golden Eagles.
