Golden Eagles Survive With a 71-66 Victory Over Concord

Box Score Charleston, WV – The University of Charleston was able to hold off Concord coming away with a hard fought 71-66 victory Thursday night at Eddie King Gymnasium.

Both teams started off the game ice cold, with Concord finally scoring the first two points of the game four minutes into the game.  However, it didn’t take long for both teams to start finding their range but neither team could sustain a lead.  Charleston (15-5, 11-5 WVIAC) was able to shoot 50% from the field for the half but only hit on one of their nine attempts from distance.  At the end of the first 20 minutes UC and Concord (11-9, 7-9 WVIAC) were knotted up at 30 points each.

Terrell Lipkins (Canton, Ohio) was the lone bright spot for the Golden Eagles as he tallied 13 points on six of eight shooting.

Much like the first half, neither team was able to jump out to a lead for the first five minutes of play until Hayden Annett (Portland, Australia) was able to knock down a straight-away three to put the Golden Eagles up by four, 42-38.  Again neither team could sustain a lead but the Mountain Lions held a narrow two-point margin with 5:30 remaining with the scoreboard showing 55-53 in favor of Concord.

Concord would extend their lead to five before back to back buckets by UC would tie the game up 60-60 with four minutes remaining.  Again down by one Charleston would come up big on the next two possessions with Fred Simpson (Bronx, NY) getting a put back and Annett knocking down a triple to give the Golden Eagles a four point lead, 65-61, with 1:15 remaining.  Up by two and late in the shot clock UC turned to Terrell Lipkins who once again came up with a big shot from deep to secure the win for the Golden Eagles over  the Mountain Lions, 71-66.

Charleston was once again led by Lipkins who finished with a game-high 25 points on 10-for-15 shooting, including hitting three from long-range.  Fred Simpson also posted a double-double for the Golden Eagles going for 11 points and 10 rebounds in the win.

UC will hit the hardwood again Saturday as they host the University of Pitt-Johnstown with tip set for 6:00pm.
