FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The University of Charleston men's basketball team took its six-game winning streak on the road to take on the Fighting Falcons of Fairmont State University at Joe Retton Arena. Charleston's suffocating defense, which holds opponents to fewer than 70 points a game, yet again prevailed, leading the Golden Eagles to a 79-66 victory and running their winning streak to seven games.
Charleston, which took a 34-30 lead into halftime and never trailed in the second half, was led by Aleksander Kesic's double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds. Senior guard Denzel Douglas chipped in 18 points, seven rebounds, and five assists, while sophomore Tino diTrapano added 14 points. Bench points were nearly even, but 12 of 15 for Charleston came from senior big-man Fred Simpson, who also added six rebounds. Â
The Fighting Falcons, who average 82 points a game, were just 2-13 from 3-point range. They were led by Thomas Wimbush's 17 points, while leading scorer Stevie Browning was 6-18 from the field and added 14 points, and Brendan Cooper added 13 points and seven rebounds. Â
Charleston moves to 12-4 on the season and remains tied for second place in the Mountain East Conference with a 9-3 record. They will take on Shepherd University in a pivotal matchup Thursday, Jan. 30, at Eddie King Gym with tip-off slated for 7:30 p.m.
