Box Score WISE, VA - The University of Charleston men's basketball team pulled out a narrow-margin victory beating the University of Virginia at Wise, 72-71 Saturday at the Prior Center.
Fred Simpson's jumper with 44 seconds left, put UC on top 68-67, however, UVA-Wise's Javon Moore answered right back with just 21 seconds left to give the Cavalier's the lead. Free throws by Denzel Douglas once again put UC up one and a steal and bucket by Tino diTrapano all but sealed the deal. UVA-Wise's Charles George made two free throws with just four seconds left, however, the Golden Eagles held on for the one-point victory.
Charleston's balanced attack was led by diTrapno's 16 points and four assist and featured four others in double digits. They were Simpson, who finished with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds, Douglas and Aleksander Kesic each added 14 points, while Xavier Humphrey added 11 points for the Golden Eagles.
The Cavalier's were led by Moore's 23 points and six assist and fellow teammate Deon Boyce's double-double of 17 points and 16 rebounds. James Turner and Matt Day added 25 points and 10 rebounds between them to round off the double-digit performers.
With the victory Charleston moves to 15-7 on the season and tied for second in Mountain East Conference play with a 12-6 mark. UC is set to take on Urbana University Thursday with tip-off set for 7:30p.m.
