CHARLESTON WINS FIFTH STRAIGHT, DEFEATS CONCORD 64-59

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The University of Charleston men's basketball team held off a last-second attempt to tie the game and won its fifth straight, defeating Concord University, 64-59, Wednesday night at Eddie King Gym.

UC, which has winning streaks of five or more twice this season, led at the half, 28-25, despite shooting just 1-for-11 from three-point range.  Starting the second half, Xavier Humphrey drained a three to take a six-point advantage.  A lay-up by Tino diTrapano gave Charleston its largest lead at eight with 17:57 remaining.  However, Aarron Miller's three-pointer with 10:46 remaining gave Concord its first lead of the half at 46-43.  The Golden Eagles responded with a balanced attack over the final 10 minutes, with Fred Simpson, Aleksander Kesic and Humphrey scoring the next 15 points, each with five, to seal the victory for Charleston.

Kesic's double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds led all scorers, followed by Humphrey with 15 points and seven rebounds himself. Rounding off the double-digit performers for UC was Simpson, who finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Concord, which was outrebounded by 13, was led by Cam Shannon with 14 points.  Terry Hopewell and Miller each added 12 points.  With the loss, Concord falls to 8-19 on the season, 5-16 in Mountain East Conference play.

Charleston moves to 18-7 on the season and holds sole possession of second place of the MEC with a 15-6 record.  UC is back in action Saturday, at cross-town rival West Virginia State with tip-off slated for 4 p.m. poiut
