CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Mikey Newsome and Fred Simpson career nights made sure that the University of Charleston men's basketball team moved forward as they defeated Wheeling Jesuit in overtime, 91-85 Friday at the Charleston Civic Center in the quarterfinal match-up of the inaugural Mountain East Conference tournament.
Newsome finished with a career high 17 points sinking five three pointers while Simpson was not to be outdone compiling a stat line himself of 16 points and 14 rebounds both career high marks. Charleston drained 15 three pointers one shy of a school record of which none bigger than the one that fell from the hands of Xavier Humphrey with just 15 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game at 76. The final 1.6 seconds would see three turnovers and each team having two looks to score neither being able to pick up a point as Aleksander Kesic's three point attempt fell short as time expired for UC.
In overtime, Simpson was the spark scoring seven of UC's 15 points, while Charleston moves to 3-1 on the season in extended games. Charleston was able to sink eight of 14 free throws to help seal the victory.
Wheeling Jesuit never gave up draining 13 three pointers as a team while being led by Andre Harris with 22 points. Eric Siefert's 19 points and Justin Fritts's 18 points gave Charleston a constant struggle.
The Golden Eagles got a team high 19 points from Humphrey who is just four points shy of becoming the 45th player in UC history to reach the 1,000 point mark. On the season Charleston picks up it 19th win of the season and will play in the MEC semi's tomorrow at 6P.M. against the winner of the Glenville/Shepherd quarterfinal match-up.
