Golden Eagles Take on Notre Dame on Wednesday

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The University of Charleston Basketball will travel to South Euclid, Ohio on Wednesday evening to play a mid-week matchup against the Falcons of Notre Dame College with tip scheduled for 5:30 p.m. (Women's) and 7:30 p.m. (Men's) at Murphy Gymnasium.

Men's Basketball Outlook:
The University of Charleston Golden Eagles Men's Basketball team (19-5, 13-5 MEC) defeated the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles were led offensively by Lamont McManus, who notched 21 points, two rebounds, and an assist in the win.

On Saturday, Charleston found their stride early on Saturday against Wesleyan as the Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 13-2 lead with 15:53 remaining in the opening half as six points from Seth O'Neal forced the Bobcats to call their first timeout of the game. Charleston widened their lead to 25-9 with just under 10 minutes to play in the half as all five UC starters contributed to the scoring efforts while Clay Todd led the Bobcats with four points.
 
In the latter part of the first half, the Bobcats began to put a run together of their own to cut the Golden Eagle lead down to 34-17 with 4:30 remaining in the half. Leading 35-24 with 30 seconds remaining, Charleston used a 5-0 run to end the first half including a last second bucket from Riley Heatherington. Charleston, who as a team has averaged 7.5 made three-point attempts over their last six ball games headed into Saturday, went 8-of-18 (44.4%) in the opening half. As a team, all eight Golden Eagles to play in the opening frame found their way into the scoring column while holding the Bobcats to 40.0% from the field and 1-of-9 from beyond the arc. Forcing nine Bobcat turnovers, the Golden Eagles used a 15-2 advantage in points off turnovers to carry a 41-24 lead into the break.
 
The first four minutes of the second half started slow for both teams as a combined five points had Charleston leading 43-29. The half continued as both teams shared buckets with UC holding a 60-48 lead with 7:00 remaining. Dusan Vicentic led all scorers with 18 points at the 7:00 mark as Lamont McManus led UC scorers with 13 points. The UC lead was as much as 18 after the under-five media timeout before the Bobcats brought the score back to 70-57. Charleston would finish the game to hold on to a 75-62 victory.
 
As a team, the Golden Eagles finished 26-of-55 (47.3%) from the field while holding the opposition to 24-of-55 (43.6%). Charleston forced 14 turnovers to outscore the Bobcats 27-17 on points off turnovers while each team scored 34 points within the paint.

The Golden Eagles have put together two straight wins following a pair of losses to Wheeling and West Liberty. Charleston comes into the contest ranked 11th in Division II in rebound margin (7.7) while holding the 7th best field goal percentage (51.8%). In the MEC, the Golden Eagles rank first in both field goal percentage as well as scoring defense, allowing the opposition to score just 71.6 points per contest. The Golden Eagles have continued to share the offensive duties this season with four starters averaging double-figure scoring with Drew Rackley leading the way with 18.3 points per game.

Scouting the Opponent:
Notre Dame College comes into the contest holding a record of 9-15 (7-11 MEC) and come into Wednesday after defeating the Bobcats of Frostburg State by a score of 77-68 on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons are anchored offensively by Levi Frankland (17.71 ppg, 4.75 rpg), DeAnthony Owens (16.1 ppg, 6.4 rpg), and Drew Scarberry (15.76 ppg, 5.52 rpg).
 
Things to Know for Wednesday:
  1. The Golden Eagles converted on a season-high 17 three-point attempts against Notre Dame on January 18th, their most since February 9, 2019 when they converted 18 against Glenville State.
  2. On January 18th, the Golden Eagles outscored the Falcons 29-1 in points from the bench, 14-2 in second chance points, and 20-9 in points off turnovers.
  3. Charleston held Notre Dame to an opponent-low 19 rebounds in their 95-70 win on January 18th.
Matchup History: 
The Golden Eagles and the Bobcats have squared off 13 times in their history with Charleston holding a 10-3 advantage. Charleston comes into the contest having won five of the last six matchups against the Falcons dating back to 2017. Women's Basketball Outlook:
The University of Charleston Golden Eagles Women's Basketball team (20-4, 15-3 MEC), increased their win-streak to eight games on Saturday with an 85-51 win over the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan College. The Golden Eagles were led by the trio of Anna Hayton and Brooklyn Pannell while Erykah Russell notched a double-double in the win.

On Saturday, the Golden Eagles opened the day with an 11-0 run that ended with a jumper by Brooklyn Pannell at the 7:44 mark of the opening frame. Charleston continued to dominate offensively outscoring the hosts 28-8 led by junior guard, Brooklyn Pannell with 10 points.
Charleston scored the first six points of the second quarter on jumpers from Palacio, Simon, and Hopkins, giving the Golden Eagles a 34-8 advantage just under two minutes into the quarter. The Golden Eagles took their biggest lead of the half of 28 points on a three pointer by freshman guard, Dakota Reeves.  Charleston capped their first half of competition with a pair of free throws from Pannell that sent the Golden Eagles into the locker room with a 25-point advantage over the Bobcats.
For the half, the Golden Eagles scored 28 points off Bobcat turnovers, holding the hosts to 8-of-24 from the field, while shooting 17-of-29.
The Golden Eagles shot 7-of-15 in the third, with no buckets from behind the arc. Charleston headed into the final frame with a 60-39 lead.  
Charleston continued to command the game both offensively and defensively, taking their 30-point lead with 5:22 left to play. Charleston kept their foot on the gas pedal for the final five minutes of regulation, taking the 85-51 win.

The Golden Eagles currently sit a game back in the MEC standings behind Glenville State (16-2 MEC) with Notre Dame holding the tiebreaker between themselves and the Golden Eagles from their win over the Golden Eagles on January 18th. Charleston's last loss came on January 18th when they lost in a game that came down to the final possession, a game the Falcons won 79-76. The Golden Eagles have played all-around solid basketball this season as they Golden Eagles hold the 7th best three-point field goal percentage (38.6%) in Division II, the 8th best field goal percentage (47.3%), and the 16th ranked scoring offense (78.4 ppg). Led by Anna Hayton, the senior averages 19.3 points and 8.3 rebounds per game played.

Scouting the Opponent:
Notre Dame comes into the contest holding a record of 21-3 (15-3 MEC). The Falcons come into Wednesday having won their last four games and improved to 9-2 at home with an 80-58 win over Frostburg State on Saturday. The Falcons hold the 14th best scoring offense in Division II (79.5 ppg) and the 18th best turnover margin (6.38). The Falcons are led offensively by Seina Adachi, who averages 17.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per contest. In addition, Jada Marone averages 15.0 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.

Things to Know for Wednesday:
  1. The Golden Eagles recorded a season-low 25 rebounds on January 18th against the Falcons, 12 less than their season average of 36.95.
  2. Charleston outscored the Falcon bench 22-7 in their last matchup on January 18th including 15 points from Dakota Reeves (5-of-8 from 3PT range).
  3. Seina Adachi posted 39 points in the Falcons trip to Charleston on January 18th. Adachi, who scored 22 points in the first quarter alone, went on the finish the game one rebound shy of a double-double.

The Golden Eagles and Falcons have squared off 15 times in their history with Notre Dame holding a 9-6 advantage. The Falcons have won five of the last seven contests with Charleston's last win coming on February 2, 2019 in South Euclid by a score of 73-63.
